Screensavers? 2012-09-12 19:55:57 Reply

Does anyone here still use them?

In case you don't know, a screensaver is either a series of moving/changing graphics, or blank screen, designed to eliminate screen burn-in. And is not to be confused with desktop backgrounds/wallpapers, which are stationary pictures/graphics.

Since burn-in does not occur in almost all modern displays, the screensaver is little more than screen art and a privacy filter, with no power saving benefits for LCD and LED backlit LCD displays - So it's pretty much obsolete for anything other than CRT, plasma, and OLED (organic LED) displays.

So, who still uses screensavers? What's your favorite one? And what type of display do you use?

I don't really use one any more but I used to use one that would play peaceful music and wake me up in the middle of the night, but fuck me, it was the most tranquil way any human could possibly wake up.

I used to have '3D Maze' if anyone remembers that, but I recently changed it to some spacey thing.

3D Maze was quite possibly the best screensaver ever made. It went beyond actual screen saving and into the realm of genuine entertainment.

Screensavers are horrendously outdated, though. Beyond mere entertainment, they serve no purpose, and this isn't the '90s whem anything on a computer screen was enjoyable.

I never really liked 3D Maze because of the paper-thin brick walls, and the guy turning at right angles and deliberately running into dead ends.

But I did enjoy Starfield Simulation (AKA Flying Through Space) for the longest time - Setting it to the highest number of stars and the lowest warp speed gave it the most realistic look, IMO.

I have no screensaver myself, when I am away from the pc though I will either turn the monitor off or go and watch a youtube video or spectate a match of LoL to have in the background.

It was my understanding that screensavers still existed on computers to this day
I have a screensaver that I use. Nothing fancy, just one of the options that came preloaded with my laptop

My laptop just goes into sleep mode.

Nope.

I remember the Johnny Castaway screensaver from when I was younger.

I'd just sit and watch that thing.

I might start using screensavers again when I get something with an OLED or Crystal LED display.

Nope. Well, maybe.

My computer screen just cuts to black automatically if I don't touch my mouse. When I watch shows or movies on my computer I disable it so it won't interrupt me though.

For this computer I just press Windows key + L to lock the screen whenever I'm going away from it. My screensaver is probably a text marquee from years ago that I haven't changed or looked at.

On my Ubuntu laptop I have the Matrix screensaver with the green computer code running up and down the screen.

When I was using Ubuntu they had this cool matrix effect one (either that or I downloaded it) that I used to use. It was pretty cool. Since switching to Linux Mint though, I've stopped using a screensaver. If I lock the screen or go idle it just gives a black screen with the time, date and user name (I think) at the top.

I used to use a matrix screensaver about four years ago, but I haven't used one since then. If I'm going to be away from my PC for a while now I either put it in sleep mode or lock it.

I use a screensaver that uses the battle backgrounds for EarthBound. My monitor is fucked up. I can't turn it on or off so once it gets unplugged or the power goes out, I'm fucked.

Same here! 3D Maze was awesome. It would start on the floor going around angles dodging things and all of a sudden WOOSH the Maze turns upside down and the ceiling became the floor! Thing is, if you actually watch it for too long, you get really disoriented (and dizzy) and forget which was the ceiling and which was the floor. Hours of entertainment in a tiny program that you don't even have to do anything with.

My laptop can't seem to revive itself from Sleep Mode/Hibernate (it is not a very good laptop) and I enabled the screensaver to show up after five minutes for some reason I've forgotten, so yeah, I do. Just a blank screen though.
