So I have been looking at the greatest songs of all times charts, and I have been looking at the stats.. and I have been scratching my head TRYING to figure exactly HOW they rank these things..
I mean you'll come across a song that has tons of high stats.. then one with lower ones.. and then another one down the line with even higher ones.. there doesn't seem to be any consistancy, even with amt of listens..
can anyone explain this?

It's weird I know. I wish they gave an explanation on this.
I think they rank the submissions in the greatest songs of the week/month/year/all time lists by considering both the amount of votes and the score. So a track with a score of 4.50 and 100 votes will be lower in the list than a track with a score of 4.49 and 200 votes. I don't know the exact algorithm they use to calculate that though but it makes sense.
What's odd is that in the lists that appear in the Audio Portal front page are different from when you actually click the 'more audio' button to see a full list. For example if you look at the 'Best Audio This Year' list in the Audio Portal front page you'll see that the #1 submission there is "Buubdurub - Disto Disco 2" and when you press 'More High Rankers' the #1 submission is "[Jay T] - Poundcake!".
I wish we got a proper explanation for this.

My guess is that they are determined in the same way as an individual's best song of the year: by number of downloads. Popular songs are determined by number of listens.
The possible downside to this is when songs actually get glitched, and the number of downloads exceeds the number of listens by a long shot.

It's something like that I believe. The actual people in the top slots have enough exposure as it is, and the A-Bot will sometimes pick songs at random. Sort of how the top 5 in the audio portal FP used to be. Completely random.
I think it's good that exactly how those songs are picked are a mystery. It helps prevent voting and DLexploits from being attempted to gain those top places.

you are probably right.. I always feared that a greatest of all time would be filled with those people, and would never ever change.

The ratings and stars you saw may be depend on the listeners choice.......
Any listener can give stars to its favorite track........

in the audio portal at the bottom there is a greatest songs of all time section - it says sorted by score but it very much isn't.

Now, are we talking just about Newgrounds audio, or on a more broad field that includes charts like Billboard or Top 40.
