Grow your own shoe and post in this thread, show NG what your shoe would be like!

Also, post your opinions on this; whether you think this is humane or not, would you buy them if you had the money, etc.

I personally think this is neat as fuck. I had no idea we were this far along with genetic modification. Shit's crazy.

I think they're snazzy.

Rayskin is a very tough, nice leather.

But you will eat that chicken dinner made from a chicken raised in an incredibly cramped mass farm, fed all kinds of unhealthy shit to make it fatter and tastier, then killed (violently) prematurely when it's meat is just right for eating.

These rays are born and raised in captivity, in a very comfortable, large environment, fed a perfect diet to keep them healthy and grow them as large as possible without altering their makeup, then killed by nonviolent means. (so as to not damage their skin)

But yeah, they are expensive, I'll give you that.

By "your exact colour and pattern specifications", they actually mean "pick from a list of things we already know how to do". Ergo, they're not doing any actual research here, it's just a matter of hatching a pair of pre-bred egg lines and taking care of a couple of rays for however long it takes rays to grow into adults.

So, there's no more design choice than what you get via a regular shoe shop, it takes a hell of a lot longer, and you can bet that price tag is just them trying to claw back all the money they spent on the initial germ-line generation, not specifically taking care of your particular rays.

I'm failing completely to see the point behind how this is any better than just dying ordinary ray leather. Using pigments that are actually proven to last a lot longer than the ray's natural pigments, by the way.

There are currently 29 different patterns available. Each of which can be combined with 2 other patterns. If you do the math, thats 29x28x27 possible different combinations. 21,194 different possibilities. Then you get a choice of combining three different foreground colors, and three different background colors. There are 21,194^3 possible different shoes. That is 9520040369384 different pairs of shoes.

No customization my ass...

And... how many different designs can you draw on a piece of paper and hand to an independent shoemaker? What if I want a logo and not just a pattern?

It may be a very long list, but it's still restricted to a list. And when you actually look at it, the majority of variations on the base patterns look very similar to each other too.

Ridiculous price, dumb thing to do.

This could easily be done without killing animals.
Plus if they have cool looking genetically engineered rays, I'd rather keep them in a fish tank and see them than wear them on my feet.

This is probably fake, but if I won the lottery, hell I'd buy a pair. And no, I don't care about a couple of fucking stingrays. Stingrays bread in captivity live long, healthy lives in a comfortable environment. If they were in the wild, they'd be lucky to live half as long than in captivity.

This is kind of fucked up, but as long as they use the meat of the fish after they remove the skin, I have no problem with it.
