I just read someone complaining about "try-hards."
I've heard (and know the definition of) this in online games but, in terms of online posting and online forums, what exactly is a try-hard like? Or do?
Someone who bites at every troll... or?
I really don't have any idea.

Somebody who fails at trying to stand out in the crowd.
In other words, a poser.

I've only hear it when I play Black Ops or Modern Warfare 3. It's the stupidest negative slur I've ever heard.
It's basically a diss or bad talk towards someone that's "trying" too "hard" to be good or play. Like if you go the extra mile and try your hardest, apparently that makes you a loser/faggot.

Which is another reason why I hate the COD community.

I would assume forum "try-hards" are people who either try to be funny with their posts when they are just being stupid, or they are users that try to get a rise out of another user in a flame war, but instead make themselves seem so stupid that the other user says something like "Wow, was that really meant to be an attack on my person? You try to hard man" or something like that.

Try hard at what though? That's a pretty broad term.
Instead of taking this as a chance to condescend someone and be a huge fucking tool, you could try explaining it in better terms.

Sounds like a retard's version of "wannabe" or "overachiever". The person who invented was probably in remedial English.

A tryhard is someone who is trying too hard to prove something of themselves.
For example, if you were discussing alcohol on the BBS or in real life or wherever, you always get one tryhard who comes in mouthing off about drinking everclear or some other nonsense.

Obviously it's definition varies in context, like video games or whatever.
Try hard at fitting in? Trying to be cool? Proving a point? What? I didn't ask for you to dumb it down, I just wanted to know what qualifies someone as a "try hard" on online forums. And you explain it as... "someone who tries to hard?"
I'm sorry I didn't actually think that saying the basic interpretation of the term "try hard" was a legitimate description. Whoops.

This is basically what I was going to say - I've never heard of "try hards" outside online videogames, especially the call of duty games.
I've always assumed that people called others "try hards" in order to aim attention away from their own shitty results and try to knock bettter players down a peg.
Of course, there are always those players who scream into their mics trying to organize other online players, or telling people to flank this/camp that, etc. Those people do try too hard, and clearly are not having fun.
I have no idea what a try-hard would be on a forum - maybe someone who constantly spams in order to win "attention whore" or something?

Tryhard = a player that copies the techniques of professional gamers and uses it in-game. Usually these players don't have any idea what the fuck they're doing, because they're copying somebody else.

In music, a try hard is someone, particularly a guitarist or vocalist, who goes out of their way to do all the most "difficult" techniques all the time without using the more effective simpler techniques that would really make the hard stuff stand out.
For example, a try hard guitarist would do nothing but sweep picking, taps and arpeggios for an entire 1 hour set, to the extent where it's just fucking boring to watch him play the same goddamn "difficult" riff over and over again. This is opposed to a guitar player that grooves his way up to the solo, using each major technique only one time and then never again, displaying massive chops while at the same time not being repetitive or self aggrandizing.
It's also for shitty bands with shitty music who overpromote like crazy to get "big" shows only to not clear their overhead and lose money hand over fist to sound engineers and venue owners, as opposed to guys who just play little bars and run their own sound for a modest profit.

In the gaming scene, the term Tryhard is referred to someone who takes a casual match in a game very seriously and does their best to win it, when it does not really matter at all who wins since there won't be any prizes or money or even Ranked statistics involved for the winner.
Sore losers tend to use this term to insult their opponents and a way to say that they were not really trying to justify themselves getting outplayed.
I'd guess that a forum tryhard would be the type that would be a grammar Nazi and cares too much about his reputation on the internet, so they try as hard as possible to seem smart, funny, cool, tough, etc.
