When I went to test my movie, flash froze then crashed. When i tried to open the file again, i had an error message that said "error opening file (filename)" followed by one that said "Javascript error: could not find file (filename)"
Someone who was helping me with this pointed out that when the .fla is opened as a .zip file, an object named "contents" has a file size of 0 which i'm told could be a problem. I extracted the 'contents' from the most recent working backup (a week old) and replaced the 'contents' in the corrupted version with it. When I tried to run this in flash I got "unknown file format".
Also: When Flash crashed on me, the .swf of the movie disappeared, so that can't be used to solve the problem as far as i know.

odd, but you should never dig inside of an .fla and start changing things that way. It's never the right answer.
have you tried searching google for something like ".fla repair"?

I've of course tried google, but I haven't gotten any results so far that had the same problem as me.
I also probably should have mentioned in my first post that I'm using flash pro 8.
