Free downloadable games?

Im going on a 6 hour long trip to the Carolina tommorrow and i'm looking for some games to keep me from boredom, my graphics card is shit so something no more taxing than minecraft, like some kind of sprite rpg game.

And preferably free or cheap.

Well, there isn't anything for free, but you can probably get an old school civilization game for 10 bucks

If you go with it, get civilization 3, I have a really really shitty graphics card and it plays perfectly, and it's really fun once you get into it

Im not into RTS games, is it turn based? I've never played them, and if I did get an old one which do you recommend?

I don't know if you can still get cave story for free, but there's that. You could also download a emulator for gameboy or something similar, and get a few ROM's for it.

Technically Illegal, but the games are near 20 years old now. I don't think anyone would mind.

That should be enough. There's also free ROMs all over the internet, but I think those are illegal. Also, I think coolrom.com tells you which ROMs are protected and which are legal.

The general consensus is that ROM's are only legal if you already own a physical copy of the game in question, though even this is disputable.

That said, ROM piracy, especially from the 16 bit era (Which is the most common type due to emulation software of consoles beyond that is typically rather iffy in terms of their accuracy and framerates) doesn't really impact on company profits due to there being no method of legitimately getting the game in question on the PC. Companies will typically only give a shit about things if it impacts their bottom line.

That said, this logic means you're a douche to pirate certain Mega Drive games. Sega uploaded a lot of them to Steam and there's the classics collection cd to buy too.
