Close, but the correct answer is actually Ico.
Also I'm a hardcore FF fan but for anyone saying a Final Fantasy game you either have shit taste or need to play more games.
The guy who said Bioshock, also a good contender, easily in my top 5.

Final Fantasy VII. I'm stuck at that fucking Red Dragon. I really hate it that I HAVE to have Aerith in my party because she has shit equips, no materia, and low base HP. I don't think I'm underleveled. I'm level 32.
Either the first Deus Ex or Red Dead Redemption. Human Revolution's story was pretty good too but I thought it was kinda hard to follow sometimes compared to the first one's.
Uncharted 1 and 2. (But not 3.)
The story of the iNFAMOUS series was inconsistent, but amazing.
Heavy Rain.
And.... AND... you're not gonna believe this...
The Mass Effect series.

" - Barry Goldwater.
For a single game, it would have to be Xenogears. I'm not going to spoil anything, but it just might be the best story for an RPG, because everyone is involved in the story and plays a big part in the story.
As for a series, it would have to be Mass Effect. I know that's a typical answer, but with a fully interactive story in where every decision can change the ending, probably more so than any other game.
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.
The Sims. You create your own epic, legendary, awesome, etc story.
inFamous 1 & 2.
Not exactly the most detailed and amazing, but you can really get into it, and like the characters, etc.

Games have made me really sad before, but inFAMOUS 2 is the only one that made me actually cry.
The story is actually very detailed, if you go after the dead drops and message birds/

The good karma ending on inFamous 2, depressing :(
