"Artistic" games on front page Aug. 1st, 2012 @ 06:46 PM Reply

(WARNING: This is my damn opinion. I know a shitload of you are going to come in telling me, "You don't understand art" or "You're too stupid to get those games.")

Am I the only one that hates how sometimes, half the games on the front pages are these emotional, artistic crap that shouldn't even qualify for a game? I mean, really. I just want to go through a fun adventure with the occassional challenge, but it seems like most of the games that get on the front page just have you hold down the right arrow for 10 minutes straight while white words appear saying "Life sucks, no one likes you."

Honestly, if you're just going to do that, make it into a movie. Don't make me click on your game actually expecting it to have me doing something, only to have the same backround repeat itself for 5 minutes while just warping the colors, having sad music, and making your emo shithead of a character want to kill himself.

Look at Madness: Nexus, Interactive Buddy, The Last Stand, Road of the Dead, Spewer, etc... Most of these games have taken loads of work, and they pay off by being extremely fun, cool and innovative. Any dumbass that knows the basics of flash can make a repeating backround while spewing out how "Nothing's worth living and art is the only good thing out there." Yet somehow, people seem to get these high enough votes to get the staff to put them on the front page.

However, this is just my opinion. Feel free to agree, disagree, or do whatever you want.

"artistic" games have only showed up recently, making the genre very new, and to many (including me) they're somewhat refreshing

That's fucking insensitive of you.

I have family that are low-functioning artistic.

Incase you didn't read it correctly, I'm not only talking about shooters. I mentioned other games that come from loads of different genres that are genuinely more creative than what I am hating against.

I don't know, I remember playing quite a few of these artistic games from 4-5 years ago before I joined NG too.

I kind of agree.

I think indie/flash games as a whole, needs to stop doing that type of art games. GOOD ART GAMES,(Braid, Aether, coma) are good art games because not only do they have great gameplay, but they are considerd art because of the themes and asthetic.

TL;DR : GAMEPLAY FIRST.

I can appreciate art, so long as it doesn't come under the false title of a "game." The user above me is correct. If you're making a game, make GAMEPLAY come first. Don't trick me into thinking I'm actually going to be playing something good, and then just have me fucking hold down the right arrow key for 10 minutes straight in real life. If you want to make something artsy, put it into a movie.

Look at this circle: this circle signifies perfection, a perfect roundness, a perfect symmetry; circles can be spheres when viewed from several angles, spheres such as the Earth itself, itself, a symbol of perfection, the perfect formula for the creation of life.

A circle is a constant turn, at a constant speed, moving round back into itself, creating an endless, perfect, loop. Endlessness, a descriptor appropriate for many things relating to life: rebirth creates a cycle; mathematics opens a world of fractal geometry; and many more, all of which can be disrupted.

But nothing is here to disrupt the circle - it is much to perfect to be touched. All who observe, observe in awe and not intent to disrupt, no matter what the initial plan was. They all ended up in the same position.

Or, it could just be a fucking circle.

So you'll only reply if we all respond positively. Heh heh.

I was going to make a thread about this too; I honestly think there's been an uproar of "Art Games" lately. The earliest ones I remember were "I Fell In Love With Colors" and the rest of that series. Time Fcuk was another good one, kind of like SHIFT meets Alice is Dead!

My favorites on my old account Rague and my favorites on this one are probably filled with art games I wanted to collect or never finished. These are just in demand now apparently. You have plenty of games like Epic Battle Fantasy or Madness ----Whatever to enjoy.

Gamers in a nutshell:

Games are form of art!
Why are there so many these pretentious "art" games I just wanna good gameplay

But seriously, fuck you. Reason why they're games not movies? Interactivity. Interactivity in videogames make them completely unique as an art-form.
That is to say, gameplay should augment the experience and message, just like movie's visual side should complement the story. I do find not always gameplay in them is best thought-out, but mind you - this is NG, amateur site, and lot of stuff isn't polished here, in "classic" games too.

If you don't like those games, then don't play them. Maybe other people do, i am trying to think of a game that was mostly a story that sold pretty well. Basically you were a detective and you had to solve the crime however you chose, whatever you did altered the course of the game and there were mulitple story lines and multiple endings.

If someone doesn't want to make something that has tons of gameplay, that doesn't mean they cant try to make a game. Sooner or later people will come up with ideas for these art games that are really good. Then people will take inspiration from those games and create a new kind of game EVERYONE can enjoy.

Just calm down, its not that big of a deal.

it's called a game because it has gameplay, hitting the right key for 10 minutes isn't a game, it's an interactive movie.
