What was your first song? Jul. 22nd, 2012 @ 06:22 PM Reply

Hey guys, what was your first song? Some of us forgot our first, others will cherish it forever. And for some, it is still our best song to date! What did you write it for? Did it kick off your song writing career? And for those of you who aren't big into writing music, did you ever write a song just for fun?

For example, I Know that my first song is still my best. Although i did have some short unfinished songs before I wrote that one, I totally forgot how they went. But I might have the sheet music when i actually would write it out. But now with music programs and such it isn't necessary! But after I wrote my first song it pretty much set me off to write many many more songs.

Please do not post your song in here. We do not want self advertising

(Group was remade due to being shut down

My first song was one of the few early recordings that surfaced on YouTube -- and I wrote it when I was 13, but only perfected it when I was about 18 or 19. It was a Malay love song.

Pretty much everybody's' first song is a giant piece of shit. Not much more to it then that.

WRONG! :P
I will have to say, on a very personal level, the recording quality for the first song may have not been much, but the song itself was something far more substantial than what a 13-year-old taking music lessons would be expected to write. Even now when I look back at the song..... actually, I'll be glad to remake it and then have people judge for themselves.

Meh,i agree. MIDI,no music theory knowledge at all,and repetitiveness. BUT it did kick off my thirst for knowledge(and chords) so i guess it was not in vain.

I clarify that by the age of 13, I had distinction in Grade 8 piano and in Grade 7 theory... so...... it helped a lot.

I know.... To each their learning paces. And a lot of people will say their first songs were awful. I can say that for my drawings, perhaps. But songs, no. For some reason, even earlier songs have things which I want to borrow for use in later works. I guess some people do this too. There's a certain salvageable motif or theme in a first piece that would make me want to compose another at this point. That is to say, unless my first piece were nothing but a recurring sequence of Cm - Abm - Eb - Bb!

Not wrong. Even if your composition was good, there is no doubt in my mind that your first song had the production quality of a small brown soap dish.

When I was 13...
I didn't even have internet, and I probably had just gotten my first mp3 player.

By 2007, I had discovered the TraxInSpace revival, and thus then I discovered Electronica!
It didn't take long after that when I discovered the NGAP.

I might have had an old copy of Modplug on my hard drive before then.

My first "thing you might interpret as music" was utterly terrible MIDI garbage with no concept of time signatures or beat and deserves to be left unheard.

But it was *my* garbage nonetheless :3

The first thing I ever released ever (like anywhere on the internet ever) was an atmosphere thing that wasn't something I'd call a "song" now.

it was just bass effects played back really slow and it sounded like a jungle with big cats, wind, and a helicopter

The first "song" I completed was uploaded here was terrible, got a few DL (somehow), a 2 out of 5, and was eventually deleted because I did.

My oldest song still here is maybe a little better than that one, imo.

Anyways, I've rambled too much now.
Enjoy the rest of your day!

So if the composition was good, there's no point in saying 'not much more to it than that', right?

Where there is a good composer, I do listen to the first song submitted here, if I can't find anything else -- because at least I know what kind of beginnings they have, and a lot of them have good beginnings. No way am I going to dismiss their songs as naught but crap just because the production was substandard. I pay attention to musical technicality, followed by expression -- if those two can be heard, that's enough for me to be satisfied in a first work.

Saying that a piece is crap only means that you are not willing to revisit it at all, and that's awful attitude, in my humble, honest opinion. As musicians, we all learn things and move forward, but we also do well by seeing where we began, and how far we've come. What if the first song had more interesting twists and turns than our later pieces? If we're going to dismiss our first songs as nothing but absolute crap, we're not going to go very far.

I don't hold my first tracks in any high regard; even if they are somewhat listenable, they are still shit. Hell, my tracks are still shit. Granted, I knew what a chordchord was long before I got into electronic music, but I remember making tracks with absurd amounts of boosting on the lower frequencies.

Oh man, I don't even want to think about it. I made them in a drum-loop maker named HammerHead, so it wasn't even a legit music production program.

your first song doesn't necessarily mean that it was recorded either... it could have been written out on staff paper and played by a band. A song isn't defined by whether it is recorded or not.

The first thing i could oficially call *song* made by me, was a tune from a nokia cellphone, i just started to press the buttons, and somehow made a catchy tune :P. But two days later i discovered it was crap...

That's too bad. You're an awesome composer. I would love to hear what you have to say about your earliest music, even if you think it sucks.

Is the concept behind this post a giant piece of shit because you used the word "then" when you really meant "than"? The answer is no. I know what you were trying to say. Even if the presentation of your idea wouldn't bear the scrutiny of some uptight grammarian, does that make it any less meaningful?

It's important to make every effort to attain the highest production values, but maybe this thread could be about early composition and the inspiration behind it.

Personally, I think too much emphasis is placed on technical stuff these days.

Amen to that! Songs need to be considered not only for their technicality, but also their inner value -- what can be drawn from them.

And Stunkel, now that I consider your response... The first score-written song I've ever done was when I was 10, and it was a compulsory class project (I was in Yamaha's Junior Special Advanced Course). I scored 3 stars out of 5, natural since it was my first foray into composition (and involuntary too). I had a lot of prodding from my teacher, so that contributed to three stars. This song was actually professionally recorded, but I can't find the recording anymore, so.... yeah. : (

But my first voluntary composition was when I was 13, and that turned out far better.

Oh god... My first song? Whatever it was, it's long gone xD My first composition was in 4th grade when my music teacher told us to. After that, when I'd gone into 5th grade, I downloaded the trial of FL studio 7 or 8, can't remember which one it was. anyways, I made short little shitty things, and I didn't even know how to export let alone save a file, and I had no idea what the playlist was! Some time went by with me just fucking around with that when I think I'd obtained fl studio 9 in 6th, maybe 7th grade in which I'd really started to get into making music. (that was about 2009-2010) I can tell you guys that anything made in '09 was absolute shit. in 2010 I'd made at least one or two decent enough tracks, and by 2011 I was finely making likable, listenable music. now 2012's almost over, and I can say that I've definitely learned a lot about music in general, and probably have a much higher appreciation for it than I would without this experience.

To the point of the thread though, My first recorded, real 'song' was at least 10 times worse than any of the weird techno (or whatever genre it was xD) songs from 2010 (that I haven't taken down... I kind of wish I hadn't deleted all of my '09 submissions to really see where they were, but... meh. I still have all of the files on an old computer, I believe. That computer, however, is broken, and I'm not quite sure how to extract data from a hard drive like that.

but in the end, what do I know? I am just a teenager after all.

Don't be silly. Saying that a piece you made is crap is just that, and who wants to revisit crap anyway? Nothing I made for the first 2 years I was making music is something that I would ever want to remix, remake or even repair. I can't even look at it for inspiration or ideas - to me that's like collecting your own spit in a glass and then drinking it.

How far could you have possibly come if your first song is still better than anything you made long after it? Eventually you just need to forget about your old work. That's what it means to move forward.

I was 13... or 14... I was using the demo of FL Studio to export loops, and then import them into a pirated version of Sony Acid (why the hell didn't I just pirate FL Studio? lol).

Anyway, around this time, my friend started saying a new phrase every time something went wrong. The statement was, "Poo on toast!". Another one of my friends would mimic playing a guitar while singing "whenever I think of you... I think of poo on toast," every time he heard, "poo on toast!" from the other friend.

This gave me inspiration to write and sing my first track ever.

It really was the worst piece of music ever written, recorded and produced. And to make matters worse, a year later, when my skills had improved (by like 2%), I decided to remake the track. Totally different tune, but the same lyrics and theme: "Whenever I think of you... I think of poo on toast".

True story.

Most of my first few songs were just using Reason presets, so they don't sound awful, they just had that sort of preset sound.

I started making music on a Gateway desktop my mom had bought the family when I was about 14. Eventually it turned into a piece of crap and shut off every 3 days and stayed off for the remaining day. If I stayed on it too long it would crash and turn off unexpectedly so I had to learn how to work at a faster pace other wise I would have lost all my work because I was using a fruity loops 4 demo. I was making about a song a day and then I would render it in the morning before it crashed and listen to my progress on the way to school and in class. I can honestly say that I don't remember how my first songs were because everytime my computer shut off I would have to start from scratch with a new song when it turned back on.

I would remake mine, but LMMS doesn't allow MIDI export STILL... and it's been on the 'please add' list for like two years. >_<

At the time I wrote it, I had absolutely no formal music theory, could barely play the piano (I still can't read piano music in real-time, but hey, I can bang on a piano and make nice sounding stuff come out XD), and didn't have enough sense to fix crackling. Musically, it was pretty impressive for opus no. 1.
