if you're talking about basslines use the word bassline.

most people use the word drop to refer to a breakdown or climax or something along those lines, which is flat out incorrect.

you win....thats it man! you win!

I agree but it's terminology which is widespread now. It's really just slang too.

If you have to make dubstep, mix it with other genres and try to experiment in the genre

First off, buy a mic. Plug it into the computer, download audacity, press record, and "wub wub wub wap wap wap yui yui"

That. Or use a voice synthesizer. It'll work about the same if you know how to work it.

I recommend FruityLoops (FL Studios) with a plug-in called "Massive". A lot of dubstep artists use it, even Skrillex.

Is this plug-in a LFO? I am working with a program I have used for a while (only cause my dad had it for some reason) Acid Music. It has an area where you can put in plugins and have tried using the built in LFO, but can't get anything to modulate as much as I would like to get that wub wub we all wuv wuv.

So my question is: is there an LFO that will get you to dubstep wub wubs, or does it need something extra? AKA what can I do on my outdated and never used program to get my wubs?

Aaand sorry for any misuse of terminology. Though I think it would be funny if someone called me out for something ;)

massive is a full blown synthesizer. it has 4 LFOs built in.

LFO's aren't anything special. they just tell parameters how to move.

i dont know how you might be able to get wubs out of Acid Music using the built in LFO. it depends on what other synths and effects you are able to use within Acid. i wouldn't bother, it sounds like you're a beginner, it would be easier for you to use something like massive (or pretty much any other synthesizer you can get your hands on)

OP, all you really have to do to make dubstep is wub wub, wub wub wub, wub wub wub wub wub wub wub.

But seriously, if I was considering making a dubstep song, I'd look around for some free VST software that uses dubstep-sounding instruments.

it uses matrix synthesis or whatever its called, (cant remember the proper word)

learn to use sytrus or other matrix based synths before investing in fm8.

ive learned to use fm8 rather well, but i still always feel like im just guessing when routing stuff. When I use massive i can usually achieve the exact sound i aim for.

Yeah I have been using it mainly to record and mix songs. My experiments with pre-made tracks haven't been too good but my brother has this sick song he's making (much more creative musically than I am). I was trying to figure out if I could make a dubstep style bass so he can use it in the song.

I think I'll be brushing up on my terminology and understanding. Even a synthesizer in this context is something I am not too familiar with.

The first mistake a lot of people make when creating dubstep is that the drop has to be as dirty as possible. Often the build up melody is rushed to get to the drop which sounds like a complete mess. A dubstep song is indeed a song and there is music theory behind it. FL studio is a great piece of software that has truly evolved over the years but it is definitely not the best for the creation of dubstep. I use Ableton Live for my tracks (which aren't necessarily dubstep), but is definitely the best interface for it. Live has a separate row below the track where you can truly work with the synths and layer the 100's of audio effects prebuilt into live. I highly recommend not wasting your money massive. If you do want to by a plugin for 200 bucks, get FM8. It is also made by Native Instruments, is the same price, and is a whole lot better. It's a bit more complicated but you can creating any sound you can possibly think of. Anything from strings, to bells, to trumpets, to dubstep growls. It's the only synth you'll need. Everyone says Massive is the best. It isn't. Artists like Skrillex show themselves using Massive in commercials and what not, but they really use FM8. Few pro's actually use Massive. Don't forget to eq your synths and add other effects. No plugin can sound mastered on its own. Most importantly, write the melody before the drop. So many people right the drop first but then can't write a melody to go with it. Their tracks sound bad. Use the patterns in your song to create the drop. Follow the baseline of the original track. Fit each "wub" in with the beat. Feel free to expand off it but don't let it go to the point where is sound like a complete mess. Also, as a final notice, don't forget to mix different sounds in your drop. Even some highs. Everything needs balance. Drops aren't truly bass. They're mids. So adding some high sounds won't make it sound bad. If anything, it will enhance it. A good base sound doesn't go wub. It plays smoothly. If a base sound went wub, it would sound like your speakers were clipping. Keep that in mind. Adding extra base sounds good live because you don't lose the highs. Adding extra base in a recording overpowers the highs and makes the track sound smudgy. I hope these tips helped and have fun making tracks. Oh yeah, if you want some really good free VST synths and effects, look up TAL Plugins. TAL Noisemaker is one of my favorite VST's.

1.) Find a gritty synth sound.
2.) Attach LFO to the cutoff (many ways to do this in various programs).
3.) Toggle rate.
4.) ???
5.) Profit?

FM8 is an FM synthesizer by Native Instruments. The main growl bass lead in Skrillex's infamous Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites was achieved with FM8.

Also, whoever said that pros don't use Massive... lol???

YES! I bloody hate how people refer to a break as a drop. A drop is a pitch-bending synth, not the climax. Get that through your heads, people!

Don't you dare start using Massive before you've got enough experience to understand it. If I hear one more clone of a bass that originated from a 'SKRLLEX BASE TUTORIAL BEST ONE MASSIVE' video on YouTube, I think I'll be sick.

Strange, because I've heared several DJ's and producers refer to the climax as the drop. In fact, I have a remix pack of Spectrum by Zedd and the sample that contains the climax is actually called 'drop'.
