What are the points for?

I know you can move up on ranks but I guess it´s because of surfing the site, what are points for? are they redeemable for somthing else in return?

Well, if you're talking about your level points, they affect your voting. The higher the level, the more your vote is worth when voting on a movie, game, etc.
Medal points are just for gloating rights, by the way.

In principle, yes. But your voting power isn't connected to your Level. It is connected to your experience. So, the more experience points you have, the higher your voting power is. Also, the higher your experience points are, the higher your level is. ;)

Also, there are Blam and Protection points. You can earn them by voting on Flashes, that are "Under Judgement" (highlighted in purple in the classic portal, or you can browse them by selecting "Under Judgement" from the games or movies menue). If you vote 0 or 1 on a flash and it gets blammed (ie removed from the site), you get a blam point. If you vote 2-5 on a flash and it passes judgement, you get a save point.

Double post to add: There are special B/P-ranks. The higher your B/P rank is, the more "extra voting power (some percent from your current base voting power)" you get.
