Okay, who's ready for some Showbusiness Realities Learning Fun Time? If any of you are suspicious as to why they're rebooting a franchise only five years after the last installment, here's why:
Even though Spider-Man himself is owned by Marvel, the film rights to the character belong to Sony. However, part of the deal was that Sony has to actually exercise those rights at least once every certain number of years in order to keep them from reverting to Marvel (that's how most film options work with franchises like this). That deadline was coming up soon, and none of the personnel from the Raimi movies were willing or able to get it together.
So basically, this movie is a cheap, quickie cash-in made for very specific pragmatic business reasons. Not exactly the stuff great entertainment is made of, so yeah, I'll probably be avoiding this one.
