The man was drowning in an unprotected area of the beach. He couldn't just leave someone to die just because his employer wasn't paid to patrol that area.

So you're saying that the lifeguard should have refused to save someone's life because he was in an area he wasn't paid to watch? That's exactly why people like you shouldn't be in charge.

I am saying that the decision to fire him is understandable. If another man would have died because the lifeguard didn't notice he was drowning while saving the previous, would you still advocate? Considering the possible outcome, firing the lifeguard is not arbitrary at all.

I always loves when this happens and the next person in the first persons position does things exactly by the book and because of it the company is sued to the level of bankruptcy because someone died and the lifeguard in this case just sat down on the beach with a measuring wheel, watching a person drown

yes , he thoroughly deserved his walking papers , but it could of been allot worse if some person drowned because he abandoned his post .
