What generation am I part of? Jun. 19th, 2012 @ 10:57 PM Reply

I was born in late '83, and as far back as I can remember I have been told I'm a member of Generation Y.

I have accepted it for many years.

But now the local news tells me that Generation Y is people born after '83.

So what generation am I part of?

X or Y?

I just thought of something interesting, what will happen when we run out of symbols to represent generations?

You're generation Y.

That happens to be the letter after Y.

Impressive, huh?

Was this, like because they thought the world was gonna end in 2000, so they just decided that the 80s would be generation Y?

Gen X was everyone born in the mid to late 70's inside punk culture. They saw the greedy years of the 80's and decided not to buy in.

Gen Y was the first generation to grow up with the internet. Gen Y doesn't have a lot of motivation because machines do all the work and there's a lot of awesome free media.

There is no Gen Z.

Millenials are everyone who was a teen or young adult after the advent of social media. They actively self educate, but are isolated by their technology, although they are very adept with it.

As a cusp Gen X/ early Gen Y guy, I'm a weird place because I still have the rough and tumble aspects of a Gen Xer with the education of a Gen Y. I've been pretty actively involved in Millenial culture as well, but more of as a spectator than a participant.

Millenials are fucking weird. They are soft and touchy feely, and they don't know how to handle pressure. They're smart as fuck though, and they make crazy weird art.

Generations are just makeshift terms used to lump people of vastly different cultural backgrounds together based on what the media presented as the prevailing social climate of a particular period in time.

Which is to say, you didn't even know the definition of a term that's completely pointless anyway so don't worry about it.

So I guess this mainly goes for those who were born into American Culture? Because wouldn't it depend also greatly on Clan Ethics?

Yeah there is a Generation Z. From 2000 onward. Baby Boomers are 1946 to 1964, Gen X is 1965 to 1977, Gen Y is 1978 to 2000 and Gen Z is 2000 onward.

I thought I was a BABY BOOMER!! But apparently I'm a Gen X'er.

I'm sort of the same:

Like a Gen Xer (or even a Boomer): I used play outside a lot, get into trouble, get called in for dinner, watch hours of awesome TV shows, and get beaten by my parents for misbehaving.

As a Gen Yer: I spent a lot of time on the computer, playing games, and surfing the net.
