What game do you think does the best underwater levels? With camera, controls, etc.

Personally, I think every game has bad under water controls...They are always too spazzy, Im not saying they should be like walking on earth but usually underwater the controls are so weirdly inverted and slowed down

Aquaria easily has some nice controls for being underwater. There's no gimmick of having different controls to consider to move the character, it's the standard controls that the game goes by. I'd like to say the first two Ecco games as well. Both have a great sense of beauty for showing the life of underwater in video games.

I quite enjoy swimming around underwater in Just Cause 2. Not much to do down there, but rather pretty. And as far as I've seen, the uncharted series does water and water effects very well.

I liked the underwater stages in Donkey Kong Country 2 alot. Visually Rayman Origins has the most beautiful.

Does Bioshock as a whole count?

I think the Ecco and Ecco 2. I used to be obsessed with that series, the way you move around, the beautiful underwater world, and good soundtrack made it the most enjoyable underwater video game for me.

Underwater controls are something that always irritate me in games. It's not often at all that I find a game that handles well in the underwater scenes. Some of the recent games I've been playing with underwater levels are Banjo Kazooie (god I hate the swimming controls in this) and Metal Gear Solid 2. MGS2 wasn't quite as bad in terms of handling but it was still enough for me to start thinking about how irritating it is.

I actually can't think of a game that I thought worked well on underwater levels.

MGS2 had an underwater rescue level. Those two kinds of gameplay elements should never sit next to each other.

Rescuing that useless bitch Emma was easily the most horrific part of the game. Bitch couldn't even hold her breath more than 15 seconds!

There has never been a game where I would say "GEE WILLIKERS I LOVE THE UNDER WATER PART OF THIS GAME!" in a serious tone or an ecstatic mood. I usually just sigh and go on through.

But...Bioshock is an acception because you are underwater after all. Controls are fine, camera's good, etc.

The Metroid Prime series had some underwater parts/levels that weren't that irritating in my opinion. In the beginning they kinda were, but eventually you'd find some equipment that would make it a lot easier to see and move which practically made it like being above the water.

That's about the only game I can think of at moment. In most other games I think the underwater parts are very annoying.

I think Ecco the Dolphin has very good underwater game play mechanics and made both over and under water game play feel amazing. I think just about all modern games make water look beautifully stunning from above but Skyrim does it like never before.

I still think we've missed the Super Mario Bros 2D underwater stages.

Those levels set the bar for easy to control underwater levels, though I would always prefer land over water in any game.

Just one more reason why MGS3 was a wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better game.

Though, to be fair, that fight with the Fear near the water wasn't too exciting, either...

Shit, I completely forgot about that game! I love the jazz that plays when you're swimming under water. Plus the Tricky Treasures going under water were actually my favorites...weird.

Aside from this and a handful of Mario games, I really can't think of anything off the top of my head. Man, why do developers keep making underwater levels when they're clearly terrible at it?

On the flipside, Metal Gear Solid 2 has the worst one by far. It got to the point where half the time I was just letting E.E. die on purpose out of spite.

Sorry for the triple post, but the Skyward Sword flooded forest level was fantastic in my opinion.

Swimming around a previously gigantic and multifloored level by swimming was really cool, and the controls weren't that bad.

Also, THE MUSIC.

I actually don't hate many underwater levels in games. They're not much of a problem for me.

This temple is fixed in the 3DS verison with quicker iron boots, which was the main problem.

I've never played the 3DS version. The whole iron boots thing was never a problem to me anyway.

I admire the swiming in Monster Hunter 3; all you have to do is point the camera where you want to swim and press forward, that's it. It's so simple, and yet, so effective.
