But when I started to use the bone tool, the program freezes up. It has frozen when I try and move bones, and it has frozen when I try and insert poses.
It's been a real hindrance to my progress on this project, and I'd like to know how to fix the problem.

Well isn't it the fastest way to animate? I'm working on a bit of a tight schedule here. So are you telling me that the bone tool is just a waste of time?
Adobe is a huge company, there must be a way to use it, since it's been around since CS4.

Ok, well that's a possibility, because I'm really not that familiar with it anyway, but I do need to do some walk cycles, which would be better using the bone tool.
It's good! The program itself is preventing you from using that awful tool.
Here's a great place to solve practically any Flash-related problem: http://beta.toonboom.com/
One of the best swaps I ever made.

when using Adobe Flash CS5 or CS6, always remember these things:
1. did you have enough RAM in your computer, to make it run smooth at least 1GB is enough. nowadays 512MB is too low.
2. did you have any program that's running with flash? like a flash game or opening website that has flash animation in it? sometimes those program interrupt the Adobe Flash.
3. it is better to refresh or restart your computer before using Adobe Flash to make it run smoother
4. graphic cards! is your computer have enough graphic cards? no need for powerful graphic cards for gaming, just a decent one will do
