Gorguts is alright. I'm in a mood for not-so-heavy metal. If I want something heavy, Alghazanth and Azaghal

The Frogs - Lord Grunge
I like the general feeling of their music, their sound and the ambiance. But I don't like the song-writing. It's not much different then what most pop rock bands do. Verse-chorus-verse-chorus doesn't feel so generic when it's done well, but in this one you can just ear the clear line between the chorus and the verses, they just don't melt together all that well.

Heh, if you listened to literally anything by The Frogs outside of Starjob (which I love, but it's definitely their most traditional album), I think you'd be immediately disabused of that notion. Songs like "I've Got Drugs (Out of the Mist)" and "Hot Cock Annie" are anything but conventional.
Also, I don't get why traditional pop song structures are an automatic negative. There's a reason why it's such an enduring form.
Deafheaven - Dream House
This band has been getting a ton of buzz lately, and even though this kind of music isn't usually my cup of tea, I think it lives up to the hype. I'm going to have to check out the rest of their stuff. 9/10
Going on the complete opposite end of the musical spectrum. And maybe to something more fitting for 3 in the morning.

I know the band must be good. I mean, the song had a cool ambiance and I liked how they sounded, but the song-writing on that specific track was not appealling to me. Maybe their other stuff is different.

That's why I've specified that I think it can be good in some occasions, but on that specific track it was too obvious and I didn't feel that it flew too well together. Pop music spawned some great artists, I agree with that. I've not said that traditional pop song structures is an automatic negative.

They've been presented as "that other blackgaze/band that tries to mix black metal and post-rock together". But I don't think this is appropriate. It is a band that actually mixes both genres, but in a very unique fashion. I like their stuff. I really hope they won't water-down the black metal elements in their future projects. It would be a shame.
Kathleen Edwards - Away
Going on the complete opposite end of the musical spectrum. And maybe to something more fitting for 3 in the morning.
I don't know much about this scene they call alt-country. But from what I've heard, the music has some depth I really didn't expect from the genre. I feel the same resonance in such music that I also hear in well-written post-rock. It reminds me both of Jessye Sykes And The Sweet Hereafters, but also of that amazing accoustic post-rock project named Message to Bears. Rate this one:
And I would give a 8,5/10 or a 9/10 to Away by Kathlee Edwards. It was great :)

That song is an homage to Kurt Cobain, who was a fan, and the rest of the album is their most polished, streamlined work. Everything else they've done is incredibly different; bizarre, off-kilter, perverted, hilarious, and unlike anything else I've heard.

Who's the first one? I've only heard about Deafheaven through indie channels, so I'm not really clued into their metal contemporaries.

Maybe this is just because I don't really know anything about black metal, but I really liked the post-rock elements. Though I did appreciate the harder-edged elements as well, it really distinguishes this band's take on post-rock from your typical Explosions In the Sky noodling.

Oh man, a while ago there was a thread where I made a big post of alt-country suggestions for someone who was trying to get into it. I don't remember exactly what I posted, but in any event if you want to get more into the genre, I'd start with the incredible Uncle Tupelo, and by extension the two bands that resulted from UT's breakup, the massively popular Wilco and the less well-known but also great Son Volt.
Message To Bears
Wow. This song totally makes me feel things about stuff. Really evocative use of ambient sounds, too. 8/10

Oh, I might have messed that expression up. I meant that blackgaze, post-black metal and post-rock/black metal seems to be a "thing" in the United States, especially on the west coast. To some people they are just another band following the trend set by bands like Wolves In The Throne Room, Alcest and the likes. Some seem to see it as gimmicky or something. I've heard them being called hipsters.
I disagree with these opinions. I think they have their own sound and that as long as keep that artistic approach (while not limiting themselves, of course), their music will be great!

I like Explosions In The Sky :(
I also do feel that Post-Rock needs to have more artists playing with contrasts such as light/dark, hope/despair, joy/sadness. Bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor managed to do it. And I'm happy to see Deafheaven doing something similar. This might not have been done on purpose, but the way they play post-rock chord progressions but in black metal riffs gives that kind of feeling to their music. At least to me!

American Football - The Summer Ends
They do use the accoustic guitars to play smooth melodies, but I don't see them as very similar otherwise. It does have some of that post-rock feel in the leads, but the core of their music isn't the same. It's interresting music, though. I see them tagged as "emo" and "indie rock" on last.fm. Would you say that this i correct?
Anyway, I'd give a 7 or 7.5/10 to that song.
Here's my last song for tonight! Later!

Oh, okay. Yeah, any time an artist tries to experiment with genre mixing the purists are going to complain. Which is just silly, obviously. The best bands are the ones like Deafheaven that branch out and do new things.
I like Explosions In The Sky :(
So do I, but you've gotta admit they have a pretty narrow formula and they stick to it. And it's one that a lot of other, mostly lesser post-rock bands follow as well.
I also do feel that Post-Rock needs to have more artists playing with contrasts such as light/dark, hope/despair, joy/sadness.
Yeah, that's what I meant. Like for most of the new post-rock bands I hear, my reaction is "huh, well that certainly sounds a bit like Explosions In the Sky, doesn't it," and I wish they'd go to some new places.

Fair enough. I wasn't really comparing them in technical terms, I just thought they had a similarly wistful vibe.

Yeah, but "emo" means something a lot different now than it did in the late '90s when this album came out.
Cynic - Carbon-Based Anatomy
Pretty cool. It definitely picks up towards the end. 7/10
This is gonna be my last of the night as well. After all this talk of subgenres and post-rock, let's get back to the pure basics: the human voice and human hands.

I'm not that much of a fan of the band, I just really love their album The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place, and more specifically the first two songs. It's not a band that I follow a lot and I don't know every single one of their tracks.

Oh, I know. I was not trying to oppose you in anyway. I was just merely expressing my first impressions of the song.
Yeah, but "emo" means something a lot different now than it did in the late '90s when this album came out.
Oh, I know. Every musical genre gets parasited by stupid gimmicky bands who play stuff that has nothing to do with the original genre, but they still steal the name. I know emo wasn't about that stupid breakdown-chug-chug bullshit played by kids in Hot Topic clothes and fringes...
Son House - Grinnin' In Your Face
His vocals are amazing! I just don't know where to look for that kind of music. But that's one artist I'll try to remember.

Since we are here. I'll share a track by André Fortin (Andre Fortin if NG fucks up the caracters :P). He's a musician from my beautiful province of Quebec. He played in a band named Les Colocs before committing suicide in the spring of 2000. The lyrics are in french, so maybe you won't be able to fully appreciate the whole thing. He was a true poet, a nationalist and a great figure in Quebec's popular culture. He was a true inspiration to a lot of today's musicians.
I'll share the track because it uses podorythmie and I thought it went well with the track you shared!
