What does conservative mean?

I am having trouble understanding what it means to be conservative. Does this phrase have something to do with politics, or does it have something to do with a person who holds onto traditional values? Any idea's?

To my understanding, conservative refers to wanting things to remain traditional. In politics, it is most often used with the republican party, so I guess the republicans want things to stay the same.

So it's basically an interchangeable phrase that has to do with both politics, and traditional values in general? Very confusing to grasp..

Not really. The term conservative simply means sticking with traditional values and unradical. The politicians (and others) who are called conservative are called conservative because they often favour legislation that maintains the status quo and are unwilling to see very radical changes brought about
