Switching host providers 2012-06-02 11:44:05 Reply

So dreamhost really isn't nearly as good as it used to be. I heard wonderful things about it and worked for a long time, but now I need to go somewhere else. Uptime just isn't a possibility for them apparently...

Any suggestions on a good hosting solution?

Budget? Specs you require? Don't you think these are important factors when it comes to people bringing up suggestions?

Yeah... sorry host said "unlimited" everything (didn't think that meant down time to, lol), so I'm not used to thinking that way.

Here goes:

Sql databases, more than one if possible.

Right now I've got a database that's 14mb. It'll grow a lot larger if I let it. So, let's say 5gb is possible before I'd start worrying about switching hosts, and that's probably a few years from now.

I've got another that's 20mb. It's pretty static as I won't be updating it.

I've got a phpbb forum. Its only 2mb. Not sure how those scale up. Possible that one day it will.

Planning another database, but I might just make it a set of tables in an existing one if necessary.

I'm around 90mb of static pages & images. I expect that to grow if I start accepting images from other people, for their cards.

I don't know how to talk about how much processing power I need. Right now, not much. In the future, I guess it could go up. Right now I'm probably pretty minimal, but I'd like to be on a server that isn't over leveraged.

personally I like 1and1.com
I've been using them for about six years now on the shared hosting (Best plan) and I've never had a problem.
And you can more up to Virtual Hosting / Cloud or Dedicated server at any time and they will move your account for you.

But do note that any hosting provider that says unlimited isn't really unlimited to prevent abuse.
It's common practice to limit the amount of files you can store. With 1and1's shared hosting it's about 300k files and each database has a size of 100MBs.

Not sure I want to work with 1and1 either based on the reviews I've read.

I don't want to go with anyone who has "unlimited" on any of their pages when we all know its clearly a lie.

Well, I've been looking into nearlyfreespeech.net

that's a pay-as-you-use service, so that's a bit of a plus...

I wouldn't get freehostingcloud their support sucks, and their file manager started deleting my files, and ruined my site...

Not that I want to defend 1and1, in the end it's really up to you.

I've seen many of those reviews too, and in my opinion many of them was write by people that really shouldn't be managing their own accounts.

Only the hidden file limit (300K) is a half truth, but that's common practice to prevent abuse and for fair use. Anyways everything they say on their web site is true. and the data base size is now 1GB.

Well what do you expect from a shared hosting plan, shared hosts are for people that have small web sites that don't really do anything.
