The Official Euro 2012 Thread 2012-05-29 09:26:23

June 8 - July 1

Group A
Poland
Greece
Russia
Czech Republic

Group B
Netherlands
Denmark
Germany
Portugal

Group C
Spain
Italy
Republic of Ireland
Croatia

Group D
Ukraine
Sweden
France
England

Only 10 days to go until the opening game, so thought I'd get a thread up so we can discuss all things Euro 2012 in the build-up to the tournament (warm-up matches, squad selection etc.).

World champions Spain go in as the favourites, with Germany, Netherlands, France and Italy seen as the most likely to challenge them.

YOU'LL NEVER BEAT THE IRISH....YOU'LL NEVER BEAT THE IRISH....

Oh wait, unless you're spanish, or italian... possibly croatian, if that's even a word.... Ireland will lose....

I think 'YOU'LL NEVER BEAT THE IRISH....' pertains to the irish spirit... which has been crushed historically in form of plantations from England and hundreds of years of oppression immigration and famine....

Yep. Being Irish is awesome.

I sure hope they don't have shit rapping people this year again.

I also hope they use it to launch a rebellion uprising again like 20 or so years ago, that was great.

I don't have much confidence in France to be honest. They've been playing very poorly the last couple of years and I see no reason why they would do that much better now.

Anyway, unfortunately I'm going to miss a lot of the early evening games because I won't be home from uni before 7 o'clock or so. On the bright side I won't miss any of the group stage matches when my country is playing cause they're all in the weekend or at 20:45. It's just too bad that I probably won't get the opportunity to watch them with my friends.

Don't rate the Czech side at all, and I think Poland will be a decent prospect on their own turf. Especially with their core of Werder Bremen players.

Group B: Germany, Netherlands

Group C: Spain, Italy

Group D: Too tough to decide.

England and France, though both may well crash out in the quarters against the group C sides.

Can't wait, usually watch every game, and see no reason why I won't this year!

Sky news is going to rant on about how it is there time to win and when they lose...again they will be pissed off supporters who blame everyone and everybody for the teams failure but the real reason they fail so badly is because they generally are not as good as teams such as Spain, Germany,Holland etc.

But good luck to them anyway,

Actually for the first time in ages the press seem to be as negative as everybody else. Nobody thinks we stand a chance, probably justifiably, and given we have now lost 4 squad members to injury before the tournament has even started, and changed our manager just weeks before the start this pessimism will only continue. It is quite refreshing to think that getting out of the group will be seen as an achievment this time around, though I'd like to think we should manage that in a comparatively weak group.

Starting lineup for England in the first game (or at least what I would like to see)?

Hart

Johnson (though would have preferred Richards had he been in the squad...) Terry Jagielka Cole

Walcott Gerrard Parker Young

Caroll Welbeck/Defoe

A nice balance of attack and defence, and plenty of pace and power up front. It won't be this side sadly (Milner will likely start, or even worse Downing), but I can see it evolving into a side similar to this when Rooney returns (in place of Caroll), forcing Young to left midfield.

I think you underestimate the quality of France, they are a better team than England they beat Estonia 4-0 (a team which have significantly improved since England beat them 3-0) they are also undefeated in about 15 games.

Poland also have a good chance of getting second in their group, they are a good side and are playing at home.
