End of day 1. GOLD Medals. Australia 1, England 0. Let's hope this trend continues.

It's strange to see England without any medals at all. When countries like Kazakhstan have a GOLD medal and even Uzbekistan have a Bronze medal. 19 countries with medals. England not one of them.

We didn't get any on the first day of Beijing either =P Late bloomers or something.

Though I can't deny that Mark Cavendish missing out yesterday wasn't frustrating as a Brit.

I have a feeling that America and England will hit their stride in the days to come, but baseball being excluded will rob America of a few guaranteed medals.

Cavendish missed out thanks to a great tactical race by the Australians. It's called 'Revenge' for what happened in the Tour de France.

I'm still kinda pissed that they took baseball out of Games. It's not like the sport is only popular in the U.S.A. A lot of Asian and Latin American countries are fans of it, too. The arguments that it had no international appeal were bullshit.

They meant that it has no EUROPEAN appeal. Which really, is all that matters.

Also USA: Kimberly Rhode is your new hero. She won medals at FIVE olympic games. Take that, Michael Phelps!

Yes, but she's the first(!) US sportsperson to win medals at five different(!) olympic games.

Plus, she doesn't need to take any steroids to achieve that, unlike some other guy. ;)

that's not more impressive than winning 40 gold medals though. she has fucking three. FUCKING THREE.

she's also a lot older, so naturally, she'll have more opportunities to go to the olympics

but whatever

Hm, but there are people older than Kimberly, and yet no one (at least no US sportsperson) achieved this before her.
Also, there are not as much shooting competitions as there are swimming competitions. So she hasn't had as much opportunity to win gold medals. Plus: She hit EVERY SINGLE clay-pigeon in the finals. That's fucking impressive.

Yeah, if the don't win the match, at least they won the "better looking" contest. :P

Anyway, a silver medal for Team GB. That's one. Germany medal count: 0. I wonder how they want to reach the "50 medals" the german sport association set as a goal if all the favorites are eliminated during the preliminaries?

Watching water polo right now and it just occurred to me that water polo has nothing to do with regular polo. Why even call it water polo if it has nothing to do with regular polo? I don't call surfing water croquet, because that makes no sense.

What on Earth are you on about... rowing is ONLY competed over a 2000m distance, and while the USA won the mens 8s heats, I will happily put money on Team GB winning more medals in rowing over all. At least 3 or 4 golds on the cards.

A bit harsh to call a nation insignificant just because you are too ignorant to have heard of them...

Disappointing start for team GB, but no track cycling, rowing or sailing medals yet, in which we will do well in all of them.

Besides the fact that its actually 2 (bragbragbrag), I think you're missing the point of the Olympic games really.

I just cheered home a French relay team to win Gold at swimming due to how gutsy their final swimmer was. And France is the old enemy. So you know, stop being so American.

I don't know, the Mark Cavendish thing was disappointing as fuck but can't think where else we've had decent shots at medals in these first two days? Lets be honest the bronze tonight from Becky was more the crowd pushing her into 3rd then her actual ability and well awesome silver today from the womens road race to get us on the board (just like in Beijing), but again not expected really. I'd say we've right on track in terms of our shitness until the rowing and cycling really gets going. Also Ben Ainslie.

woops sorry I am posting VIA mobile phone and it doesn't help when you have sausage fingers.

A bit harsh to call a nation insignificant just because you are too ignorant to have heard of them...

if you have no real impact on world politics like US UK or france or russia your insignificant (look at Luxemberg!). plus its such a small country the state I live in is bigger than it by 3X and I live in minnesota. and people ask me if minnesota is part of canada!

Disappointing start for team GB, but no track cycling, rowing or sailing medals yet, in which we will do well in all of them.

they are redeeming themselves in soccer against UAE.
