I have no control over this ignorant new path the world is mindlessly running down. I say running, because nobody stops to appreciate the accomplishments anymore, or so it would seem to a curious time traveler from say.. the 1800's. The world got itself in a big god damned hurry, to paraphrase a line from old Brooks in the movie The Shawshank Redemption.
I choose to call this generation, "The Internet Generation". Basically Generation X with the same old depression and anger but now reinforced and stronger. Stronger hatred, and anger. Stronger lackluster depressions. More apathetic atittudes and pile on the empathy why don't you? A future Jim Carrey imitation might star opposite a fo-Jeff Daniels in a little movie called Mean and Meaner.
Here's the problem as I see it. The internet, and the ability to talk to others without the consequences of face-to-face interaction is bringing out the slime inside of everyone. The center of our pre-evolutionized brain. The mud. The ability to never grow up and learn, (or even fake) manners and polite social behavior is going to rip this world into shreds.
This generation can talk to someone who lives on the other side of the world and not even think it is remotely interesting or fascinating. The best most people can come up with is to insult one-another with all the wisdom and pressumptions of a teenager with a bad atittude problem. The thing is, these people are starting to become 30.. 40.. and are still the same disrespectful plankton they were when they were beating their meat at 13 years old.
The problem is that this "social network" is actually turning us into anti-social creature full of self-entitlement and spite. And just what will the kids think when they grow up? Mommy and Daddy told us to shut up all the time because they were too busy stirring up drama on Facebook, or talking shit in a forum?
I would just like to say that pride comes before the fall. And there are sooo many proud people trying to compare brain pans on the internet.
Think of it this way. When people used to carve their names into trees. I HEART WANDA or JOHN LOVES CINDY. Those trees are being cut down my fellow damned human beings. Those trees are also growing higher. Way to tall up in the sky to read the names anymore. Children won't go outside and read little love notes carved by knife into bark anymore. They will sit in a gloomy house, eating potato chips, whacking it, and talking shit to some guy from East Chuckafuck Island who doesn't share a religious belief. The children, sad to say it, are going to become 10 times the little shit stain you were growing up.
I have every reason to believe this will be true, and it with be WORSE because I can't even imagine future technology. Perhaps 3-d holograms? No, that might help. You could at least get that face-to-face time back instead of staring dismally into a computer screen. They called TV the boob tube.. but holy jesus christ.. nothing is as mind numbing as the endless hours spent by your average stay at home bum online.
They are always SOOOO smart, and SOOO much better, and their opinions matter THAT much more than yours do. And EVERYONE has this in their heads and hearts. You can't even correct someone, or share an opinion with one hundred people firing back at you, calling you the most childish things they can muster.
Yes, this generation is the Internet Genenration. Don't you feel proud to be a part of it? By far the most vulgar, sexually demented souls in the past 100 years. None of that good times shit here. Land of the haters! A time period exclusively reserved for douchebags! A place where everything is a game of who is the bigger asshole! Humor centered around the funny side of being a piece of shit.
Nobody takes any of that seriously, hence the lack of consequences.

I can't wait for someone of a previous generation to turn around and do something drastic that'll shake the very foundation of society as we know it today. I agree with you completely, but it's unfortunate to say as technology evolves, we're evolving technology faster than what our genetic evolution is doing. Going off your pride before fall theory, I believe that Technology as much as we love it will be the fire that burns us eventually.

Stopped reading right there because of the irony and historic knowledge deficit.

You seem to mention only the negative factors. Being part of the internet generation has some massive advantages that I'm very thankful to have.
You mention people taking for granted the fact that they can speak to people on the other side of the world. Sure, it's true enough that most people don't stop to think about the accomplishments that have been made in order to do this, but I'm sure that most people appreciate this ability when they stop to think about it. One of my good friends recently moved to Australia and if it weren't for the internet the only way that I'd really be able to communicate would be by a hand written letter sent in the mail or via expensive international telephone calls. That would restrict me to hearing from him once a month or there abouts. For this reason, I am extremely appreciative of what the internet has achieved.
I will agree that one downside to being a part of the internet generation is that, like you implied, you never really speak with people face to face, meaning that you don't get to see the real them. Or do you? I'm not sure what I'd consider to be more real. Some people are afraid to be who they want to be in the real world due to a fear of being judged. The internet allows that fear to be taken away and they are free to express them as they please. So while in some cases you will get people who act as if they are some kind of superior being, you also get to know people who may never express themselves fully in person. It's a mixed bag.
Overall though, I think I generally do appreciate being part of the internet generation. I've found friends via the internet and it has even given me a chance to meet people in person and talk face to face. Newgrounds meets being a fine example of this. If I weren't brought up as a part of the internet generation, I reckon my life would probably be a lot more dull. I'm from a small town so there isn't a great deal for me to do during the week and the only fun thing about the weekend is going to the pub on a Friday/Saturday night. If I didn't have the internet to fill up my spare time, I honestly don't know what I'd do for entertainment.
So yea, I do appreciate and am grateful to be a part of the internet generation although I must admit I do take it for granted a lot of the time.
