3.93 / 5.00 4,634 ViewsI want to play Xbox 360 games on my computer monitor with HDMI but for some reason when I switch my monitor to HDMI input I get a message that says "Check Video Cable" and goes back to the computer input. My HDMI cable is fine, I'm able to play on my TV with HDMI so why won't it work? I use an HP 2311x monitor.
Does anyone know how I can play Xbox 360 games on my monitor with HDMI? My monitor doesn't have built-in speakers, so how can I play with sound using my S-120 speakers?
I'd buy an xbox 360 VGA cable, you can get them for like $5 on Amazon or ebay. The cable will come with 2 red/white sound cables, you might need to buy a splitter which converts those cables to a standard 3.5mm jack, those cost about a dollar.
illicit makes a damn good signature.

Or with a slim console, just touch the power button and hold it, you should hear a few extra beeps.
That was a great post. Right Zach?
This is probably your problem.
On televisions, HDMI ports are actually HDMI (IN) ports, meaning they receive data and can display it on their monitor. But with most computers, the HDMI port is actually an HDMI (out) port. This means it only sends out data, which is useful for plugging your computer into a TV, but not for playing games on it. Usually only higher-end computers support HDMI (OUT) AND HDMI (IN). Computer monitors are becoming more like TVs all the time, the price for a proper monitor should be too bad in the future if it isn't already.
Don't take my word for it though, check to see if this is the case.
step 1: conect your x-box to a pc monitor
step 2: trow away your x-box
step 3: connect that monitor to a pc
Its only rape if you say no.
Say no to rape.

The monitor is already connected to a computer. I want to use my monitor to play Xbox 360 games in 1080p. My TVs are only 720p.

That's probably what I'm gonna do. I have to use a coupler to connect it to my speakers, too.

VGA output is standard definition, you'd be better off using your tv.

Amazon says that the Xbox 360 VGA cable is capable of 480p, 720p, or 1080i and the official Xbox website says it's HD. Is the Xbox 360 VGA cable actually capable of 1080i?
When I use VGA to connect my computer to my monitor, it displays 1920 x 1080 perfectly fine so why wouldn't it work as well when displaying 1920 x 1080 when the video signal is coming from an Xbox 360?

The Xbox 360 VGA cable supports resolutions up to 1920 x 1080, aka 1080p.
1280 x 1024 is recognised as 1080i with the VGA Cable.

I've used VGA since I bought my xbox, and the image quality far better than any TV I've tried it on with HDMI.
I bought a y-adapter and a coupler and cracked open my original composite cable and connected my Xbox 360 to my speakers. I cracked open the cable so I could use the composite audio to connect to my speakers and HDMI to connect to my monitor at the same time. I can hear the audio but when I change inputs on my monitor to HDMI, I still get that message telling me to check my cable. The cable isn't the problem, it works on TVs. Does anyone know how I can get HDMI to work with my monitor? I use the HP 2311x.
I found out what the problem is. Apparently the HP 2311x is only compatible with High Speed HDMI cables. So I guess I'm gonna get one on Amazon or something.

Sorry, what I meant was picture quality, VGA is simply an analog display signal; while DVI is digital. When you start talking about pushing more bandwidth over VGA (more bandwidth because there are more pixels; more color data to send in 60hz) you might start to see a benefit to DVI. DVI / HDMI means you're guaranteed the best quality because a digital signal is all or nothing.
If you're going for VGA invest in a good cable.
