Best way to practice shading? May. 21st, 2012 @ 12:56 AM Reply

I realized I'm pretty good at just the line part of drawings, and I can even draw people pretty accurately with reference, but when it comes to shading things in I suck big time. I really want to practice, but I'm not exactly sure where to start. I want to get into digital drawing/painting but it seems easier for me to draw by hand (with reference), usually in monochrome with graphite pencils.

The best way to practice shading is the same as the best way to practice line drawing; draw from life.
I can offer a few resources on shading though that may give you a hand.

the way I learned was from doing random shapes and adding it in, also looking at how other people did it and mimicking their methods works just accommodate yourself to doing it naturally.

one thing, that may or may not be useful is to do some gradient scales with a 2B and get it as smooth as you possibly can WITHOUT smudging.

shape studies.

Everything on earth can be stylized into basic forms.
Learn how light works on these forms, and lighting anything is lots easier.
Worked for me.
