Pope John Paul II is pretty old and has been having his share of health-related problems, so he probably doesn't have much time left in him.

About 900 years ago Saint Malachy prophecied about all future popes from Celestine II (elected in 1130) until the end of the world. His prophecies consisted of 112 short Latin phrases that somehow related to each Pope. Counting from Pope Celestine II and on, that would make Pope John Paul II #110 on the list. Here's what the 110th prophecy says:

De labore Solis, which translates to "of the eclipse of the sun", or "from the labour of the sun".

So what? Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II's given name) was born during a solar eclipse, that's what.

---

So going by the prophecies of some long-dead saint (which you could choose to either believe or not believe) we have two Popes left until "the end of the world". Here's the 112th prophecy:

In persecutione extrema S.R.E. sedebit Petrus Romanus, qui pascet oues in multis tribulationibus: quibus transactis ciuitas septicollis diruetur, & Iudex tremêdus iudicabit populum suum. Finis...

"In extreme persecution, the seat of the Holy Roman Church will be occupied by Peter the Roman, who will feed the sheep through many tribulations, at the term of which the city of seven hills will be destroyed, and the formidable Judge will judge his people. The End."

So like, I'm gonna try to check this thing out tomorrow during sunrise. If the sky is cloudy here, I'm going to be at least slightly pissed off. Even if it isn't, it probably won't be much to look at, but still.

And I'm going to check it out on the TV on Tuesday morning, which is when it's actually going to happen if your links are to be believed :-)

It's almost time. How are with supposed to see it when it travels across the sun? Isn't looking into the sun bad for your eyes? Or maybe it goings into almost like a partial esclipe. (sp?)

It'll be fun to watch through my welding mask, so the sun doesn't burn my eyes away.

I don't beliveve in Horoscopes, per se, though I do believe in the fortunes from fortune cookies, as they have been right more often than not.

hahaha...around seven or so years ago I got a fortune that said "keep this fortune, it will bring you good luck" and it's still in a little box somewhere on my shelf. My luck hasn't changed much since I got it though. :P

I don't remember exactly how far east Houston is, but most of Texas won't be able to see it. : \

I wonder if the news on TV will even mention this happening. I'm guessing it'll be a 15-second blip, if even that. Maybe there'll be an entire paragraph in the newspapers about it!

Please people, it's on TUESDAY, not tomorrow. Either click on the bottom of Steve's links, or just google for "transit venus". The first google result shows (my emphasis):

One of these is the transit of Venus on June 8, 2004.

Astrology is bullshit. And hell, I'm Mexican, but why the hell do the Mayans have to be right about forecasting the end of the world? This from a tribe of people who would cane each other if they would step on a worm, believing the worm was a descendent of the god of fertile land.

WARNING: DO NOT LOOK AT THE VENUS TRANSIT WITHOUT PROPER FILTERS TO BLOCK OUT THE SUNLIGHT.

Watching it with the naked eye or through ordinary binoculars or telescopes could quickly lead to permanent blindness

Yes, it can make you blind faster than a Flash that autospawns Outwar is whistled away. This is said to be more dangerous than a solar eclipse.

One speck, eternal darkness. Beware.

When I say "the world as we know it", I mean...well, how do YOU consider this world? Peaceful? Hateful? Greedy and money-obsessed? Kind and benevolent? What? What if the US and/or the EU falls just like ever other major empire has fallen throughout the ages? People don't think it's possible, but shit, anything is possible, and history has proven that over and over again.

I could probably find a video of it online now, but eh...I wanted to see it with my own eyes, however unremarkable it would have turned out. : (

Ok i see your point, that would be a turn for the worse. I can actually see it happening, look at the shit we are going through now, world famine, global warming etc....Maybe the end in 2012 isnt that far off.

Yes agreed, even when i watched the mini meteorite shower in Scotland a few years ago, it was nothing special, but atleast i saw it, things that have travelled millions of miles just to burn up in our atmosphere. Iam fascinated with stuff like this, and if you do decide to look for an online cam, would you post it here so i can join in :)

Yeah, I managed to get a glimpse of it too. It wasn't as cool as the total eclipse that happened where I live in 1995 or so. That was an awesome event.

It might not be as awesome, but its something no one alive has seen, and now we have seen it, i think that makes it brilliant in its own.
