I know that Tom added a "Latest from your favorites" section a few days ago, which is located near the top of the NG home page. However, I couldn't find where the "game/movie of the moment" section (the one with the custom banners) went. Was it moved somewhere, or did they get rid of it completely?

Yes, Tom did remove it completely.
"1) The Flash-based feature box is gone. It just didn't seem to be getting good results in its current form so maybe we'll revisit it with something different."
