Have you tried doing anything in 3D before? It's worth experimenting with (once NATA is over, I guess.) I've had to start learning Blender for school (which is a free 3D program, I should add, so you've really got nothing to lose.) Also having a good background in 2D like you do should make it a lot easier, because you only need to learn how to use a program, and not how to animate, because you already know that.

I've made a few models in Blender and Autodesk Maya, and have done a little bit of rigged animation in Blender. I'm actually not half bad at the modeling aspect. i haven't really done anything crazy complex, though. Nothing more than a few hundred verts.
Interestingly enough, I somehow broke the free 30 day trial of Maya, and now it's sitting on my quick launch bar stuck at day 14 of 30. Basically, I obtained a free copy of a $2,000 program entirely on accident.

I've definitely spent more time eating sandwiches than working on this though. It doesn't help that I spend my spare time chillaxing instead of doing something productive.

I hit that a lot too. Every time I think a shot is going to be easy it turns out that there's something trickier involved that takes me a bit longer to do :I
