Calgary 2012 Meet-up! 2012-05-11 21:15:21

WHERE?
Calgary.

WHEN?
Early July would be preferable since that is when the Stampede is happening. If we can't make it for that, then sometime in the summer.

WHO?
Anyone that wants to come. But we will all be probably drinking later on in the evening so if you're not 18 or over then I'm afraid that you're gonna have to find you're own form of entertainment.

WHAT?
-CALGARY STAMPEDE
-Downtown Calgary: There's always something to do downtown as far as I know. We will figure something out
- Calgary Zoo: If you guys want we can also go here. It's only a 5 minute train ride from downtown.
- Fancy cowboy restaurants: Calgary is literally PACKED with these.
-Chinook centre: Huge Mall

We are not limited to only these things. We will probably find other stuff to do. We might just end up playing video-games in someone's hotel room.
Accommodations
You are all responsible for where you will be staying. I suggest hotels since there are plenty of them around here.

Transport
If you come with a car I highly suggest parking it since we are most likely going to take the C-train everywhere. Also be
prepared to walk around a bit.

Costs
Take care of the hotel/bus/car/plane fares however you wish.
Bus/C-train fares are $1.75 for youth (Under 18) and $2.75 for adults (Over 18)
Expect to spend a good $100 at least. Don't be cheap because no one likes to spend money on people they barely know.

What can I bring?
Clothes, jacket, video-games, money. You don't need a passport if you're flying in from another part of Canada. Bring whatever you think you might need.
SO IF YOU'RE COMING LEAVE A MESSAGE HERE OR PM ME. IF YOU ARE DROPPING OUT POST ABOUT IT HERE OR PM ME!!

You can always show up! The stampede itself has a lot of cool things to offer. If you live nearby, I would definitively suggest to come! :P

By far the most doable meetup for me, since I live so close.

Still, I'm not sure if I'll be going or not.

FINALLY A CANADIAN MEET THAT'S REMOTELY CLOSE TO ME!

If I can make it (and I more than likely can) I'll be driving down from Edmonton on the day of. I probably won't be drinking, because it's only going to be a day-trip for me, but I'll do my best to rustle up any other "Edmontonian" Newgrounders and bring 'em with me, if there ARE any out here, that is...

Never been to the Calgary Stampede, either, so I'm looking forward to this already...!

Let's see how many staff members we can sucker into joining us...! :3

It's a maybe for me. I live in Edmonton during school, but a little further away in the summer for work. I might be heading up to the stampede anyways to meet up with some friends from university.
If I have a chance to sneak away and meet some Newgrounders that would be pretty cool though! I've never been to one of these meets, since there are rarely any anywhere near me.

GAH!

Orly? I live in Edmonton too. Northside.

This is definitely doable for me. It's only a 3 hour drive to Calgary from Edmonton. There's plenty of drinking venues for those over 18. We could either go down Center Ave. or the Red Mile. The C-Train will definitely make everything convenient if we choose locations in close proximity.

Those of you who skateboard should bring your boards (if they're street decks). MIllenium Park is Canada's biggest outdoor skate park. It's worth checking out.

I'll be moving to Calgary in the next couple weeks, but I can't give a for sure yet until my ducks are in a row. Chances are I won't be able to go because of work, but I'll let you know what bar I'm working at so you bums can visit me.

Btw, for anybody who is wondering when the Stampede is happening, it starts on July 6th and ends on the 15th. So that would be the preferable timeframe. If not enough people can make it for those dates, we can always reschedule.

hmm... I was actually looking into visiting Western Canada this summer. This could be a lot of fun.

Though I'm French Canadian and I know they shoot my kind on sight over there...

Decisions, decisions...

I lived in Montreal for a couple of years. They haven't found out yet, but maybe that's because I completely lost my french accent.

Either way, GO FOR IT!

Plus, WestJet is surprisingly cheap for that time of year...
Any chance we'd be able to plan definite days for the meet in the next weeks or so?

It is important that you set specific dates for the meet so that those who are coming from abroad can snatch up cheap air tickets before they're gone.

I will post up a few dates tonight considering the meet up will be somewhere between the 10 day span that the rodeo is going on,
If you are indeed coming to the stampede there is a fuck ton and a half of gambeling and minigames on the strip at the park...
Expect that if you are coming to buy food on site (3-7$ a single serving) gambeling and minigames (2-20$ a spin toss or throw or dart ext.) And room at that time anywhere from 70-120 a night
The actual races range from 50-400 (races and wagons and rodeo package deals around 450)
and a few special rides like the sky, puke your shit up your moving so fast like a slingshot or cannon ball, ball or lower end things like the bmx tournoment at 20 to the Xbox and PlayStation huts at ... 5..$..?
Enternece is 30 or under depending what they want to charge and there is a full military exhibit and farming and rodeo thing that is free, along with a petting zoo, so you can touch a sheep or a cow if you want to :p

Gambeling in the casino is regular rates and the food is 1.4X the price usually

If it looks steep remember you would be walking into a world class rodeo... they have been doing this for 100 years now and it only gets better, OH and I forgot to mention the bands ... there is live entertainment, draws, prizes, and a bunch more shit... even the glorious deep fried Oreo, icecream, coke, taffy, pizza, mutton, and well... if you have ever thought about deep frying it.. we have it most likely

For a few days expect to spend 250 a day for a real full out experience (not including the rodeo) (give or take)

Alright, would Friday the 6th weekend work for all of you? It doesn't really matter for me since I'm free all the time in the summer.

Thorough explanation of the stampede.

Wow, thanks for that =D. I didn't read your post before I did my last post. I never really went to the stampede, so I have no idea what you guys want to do.

I worked stampede for 2 years ...

there is also balzack mall up north with a arcade
the Chinook mall mid south with the threter and stuff n things
the bow river with all the places to just sit down and enjoy the water and place
the mall downtown that offers everything from pool halls to gizmo shops

I need to butter my shit and get organized ... so much shit I could hook people up with
AND THE CLUBS AND NIGHTLIFE ...GEEZE

the stampede is from july 6-15, it will take up 2 weekends, the first and second weekend of the month
we can all either meet up on the first weekend,
during the week if available
or durring the second weekend nearing the ending of the show

the finals happen of sunday where all the top coyboys will be competing for the trophy... meaning that is the 14 and 15 that everything big and shiny happens at the rodeo
(did you know that a few years back there were casualties at the rodeo because of terrible accidents? thats how hard this thing is up/over/down here)

the date that you should plan to be here is friday the 13 and be screwing around in the city for the weekend

if you have questions on where to stay then see below:
your car: cheep... very cheep... maybe not comfy but cheep... i can show you where to shower at a ymca or something like that ... kinda grose dude :P

for a hotel then book this shit up fast!!
Travelodge Calgary SouthâEUZ
7012 Macleod Trail Southeast
Calgary, AB T2H 0L3
(403) 253-1111 stones throw away from both the c-train and Chinook mall where you can shop or get all over town. prices from probably 90-140 a night maybe want to find a different newgrounder and share a room
they also have free breakfast so you get a free meal...
free food
close to c-train
close to major mall
about 130 ish a night
wireless internet access
has a pool i think

IF you go to google and type in calgary hotels and follow what i have shown you here... i have outlined the c-train line THAT GOES TO the stampede's doorstep
SO that means that you are indeed able to go to any kind of hotel you want, and parking at a c-train station is free BUT remember that on those dates you will be arguing with about 1.2 times the number of cars that can parking at the c-train parking stations because they dont want to park downtown at the 20$ for a spot, spot
here is a list of the c-train locations
http://www.calgarytransit.com/html/ctrain_stations.html
i suggested the hotel above because the location of the hotel is close to to a major mall (Chinook) AND a c-train platform making it ideal for you

(there is also a bowling ally below the mall ... who knows.. drunk bowling might be fun)
