Hollande is French President 2012-05-06 20:39:15

Francois Hollande has been elected the new French President. I haven't been following France much of late, so how do you guys think Hollande will be able to deal with the countries extreme debt as a Socialist? If there are any French users, do you guys support Hollande? Why? What's wrong with Hollande? Does his lack of political experience hobble him, or is fresh blood needed in the kind of situation France is currently in?

From what I've read of Hollande, if he gets his way he'll turn France into Greece, and given how France is a major economy, that would likely ruin all of Europe since Germany can only do so much.

Really? Because what I've read has suggested the opposite. He ran on a platform of distance from Merkel, Greece, NATO, and the austerity measures imposed thereby. Granted, it looks like he'll have an opposition parliament, so they'll be able to keep each other in check.

Yeah but he wants to continue on with policies that got greece into the need for austerity measures in the first place. But if he has an opposition in parliment it looks like he ain't gonna get shit done his first term.

you can criticize france for overspending, and rightfully so, but really there are no countries in europe right now that are even in the same ballpark greece is in. its not an easy comparison to make.

The mere spending of money didn't get Greece into the mess they were in. The spending of money without thinking they had to raise any to cover it got Greece into the mess they're in. To find the country that's most similar to that dangerous path look no further than your name.

They already pay stupid high taxes in France though. Now I have no i have no idea how big an issue of tax evasion is in france but if they raise them to the level Hollande wants I can only imagine a bunch of rich frenchmen sending all their assets to switzerland, thus leaving them in a predicament about how to get revenue. Regarding America's debt issue I think we should cut spending instead of trying to raise revenue, but that's left to another thread.

Well, control of the Senate flipped in last years' Senate election, and all the seats of the National Assembly (the lower house) are up for election on June 17. Although I haven't seen any polling about that one, given the left-wing wave that's seems to be sweeping France as of late, I wouldn't be too surprised to see the left wing parties making big gains there as well.

I wouldn't count on the conservatives staying in control of the National Assembly, seeing how they've lost control of both the Senate and the Precidency in the space of less than a year.

Personally, I do not care who is in charge as long as they get the problems FIXED.

I am sick and tired of hearing this debt crap and Eurozone depression. Look at the unemployment: 24.4% in Spain and 21.8% in Greece. THIS. IS. INEXCUSABLE. In this era of technological advancements and a greater ability to communicate with others around the world, people in developed countries should know better than to let things reach Depression levels. Are these people so stupid that they could nuke themselves by accident?

The United States is not much better off. Just look at ME, as an example. I got a freaking Master's Degree in an engineering field, and yet I cannot find any employment whatsoever!!! The American economy is stagnant at best, and chances are things are going to get worse.

What Hollande is does not matter. It's what he does that matters. We just have to wait and see what happens.

When it comes to this debt crisis and economic calamities, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. I want this crap fixed now. I don't care who fixes it, as long as someone fixes it.

If that's true the American economy is in shambles engineering was suppose to be one of the few fields where a college degree was worth the paper is was printed on.

Add that austerity measures cost people jobs and you have the same financial shit mess coupled with higher unemployment. Austerity is a boom measure to cut back and get things back in order. It does not, has not, and will not ever work in the midst of a serious downturn.

Course, once China stops buying american debt, we're fucked....

But then so will China, so I doubt China is in any rush to stop buying our debt.

this is true, but once China dig itself into a hole, then what? We've become China's bitch, if China's economy for some reason flounders, we're going down with it.

But you forget the wonders of fiat currency. Be creative here. If you had total control of the value of money and you were faced with an imminent flood of previously hidden notes, what would you do?

Rating means nothing in terms of quantity. 1 person rating it a 10 out of 10 gives it a ten, even though only 1 person watched. ;)

The government is part business and part consumer, not everything the government spends on is economically productive, for instance we need major highway maintenance but we don't need new lanes on the road to Tiqueweiwei, population 400, in the middle of the Mohave desert.

If we don't build the lanes what happens? Nothing, the road workers aid in highway maintenance while we save money and reduce the deficit. Essentially the resources the economy would have had to use to produce asphalt for the new lanes go towards helping businesses grow and create jobs ending the recession.

Realistically though MSNBC is the counterweight to Fox News, so from a centrist point of view, neither one of them are more reliable than the other. However since your views reflect those of MSNBC you'll tend to watch what you agree with.

Yes I get it you don't recognize Fox News as a News channel. Those numbers do suprise me though, i would've thought for sure CNN would've had higher rating.

MSNBC has a left-leaning ideology, FNC has a right-leaning ideology, and that's all fine and well, but what separates them are the methods by which they push their ideology. If MSNBC has a liberal slant in their news reporting, it is an implicit slant, whereas with FOX News, they are explicit in their bias; it is their mission to slant the news. Not only does FOX have a bias in the stories they choose to report, they employ methods which would more commonly be associated with a propaganda outlet (dishonest editing, deliberate misinformation, the repeated use of buzz words and phrases, etc) which to me disqualifies them from being called a legitimate news outlet. There is no liberal equivalent doing what the FNC does.

I could go on and on about the FNC, but I feel it might be going a bit off topic here, so I'll just leave it at that.

I live in Dayton, Ohio. Nearby is Wright Patterson Air Force Base, so the immediate area has a lot of defense contractors. I have been expanding by job search area to include the entirety of Ohio and its bordering states. I have been to three career fairs within the past couple months, professionally dressed and with my resume and well prepared, and have not been able to get anything at this point. I have looked at Monster.com and USAJOBS.gov for employment, as well as the sites of business contractors.

I have a job on campus, but it requires me to take classes to keep it. Therefore, I have been taking classes just to have any sort of job at all...and I think my student loans cost more than I earn! Due to changes in majors and stuff, I have been on campus since 2002, and my loan costs are equal to aDodge Viper.

I am most certainly NOT a person who showers once a fortnight.

------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------

Anyway, back to the topic on hand. I have looked at stuff like a 75% millionaire tax (which may drive the rich out of France?) and heard stuff that France is going to collapse and the United States will be next. Of course, how trustworthy is information that comes out of a horse's ass?

I am sick of hearing this crap, and none of these countries should be experiencing this sort of economic crap in this day and age. People would have to be so incompetent that they would forget how to blink for Great Depression level unemployment and woes to take place in the developed world today. Well, that's just how I feel, and I do tend to overreact.

We need solutions, not excuses or ways to make things worse. It might ultimately be up to the people themselves to solve this.
