Rushed down the Weather Institution filled with Aquas, got Allie the hasty Castform as a reward. Man, if only this thing could change forms during a sandstorm, that would be cool. Gave May a bad matchup as well. Fly has been taught to Shade.
In preparation for Winona, I figured Nikola and/or Atlas Rex would be hard counters, but then I remembered that her Altaria carries earthquake. As such, I taught John II ice beam. In the actual fight, I was right to do so, as he took a dragon dance-boosted one quite well, and fired back. With that thing out of the way, Nikola rushed everyone else down, and made the badge another freebie.
ROUTE 120 CATCH: hm, a Beautifly. Quick, what's the first name that comes to mind when you think of a 3' pollen-sapping butterfly that also saps human essence if angered? Guy name, not Mothra. What else was there?
Zapdos, Electrike, Gligar, Machoke, Tentacruel by surf, Volbeat by surf, Magnemite by surf, Sunkern by surf, Steelix by fishing, Claydol by fishing. Well, I would've liked to have a steel-type by now...
ROUTE 121 CATCH: in the grass, a Hypno attacks. Why would you do that? On top of that, this one had to play hard to get. Well, screw you too. I already have a Drowzee line...now let's see what showed up too late.
Chinchou, Houndour, Arcanine, Trapinch, Vulpix, Umbreon by surf, Zapdos by surf, Kecleon by fishing, Cloyster by fishing. Maaaaaan.
ROUTE 122 CATCH: in the water around Mt. Pyre, I get a Teddiursa by fishing. At level 10. With a good rod. MAAAAAAAN. Lulu, why you gotta do this? Especially when I could've gotten:
Wooper by surf, Nincada by surf, Marowak by surf, Pidgeotto by fishing, Aipom by fishing. Well, it's jolly-natured, so that's a consolation, I guess.
MT. PYRE CATCH: I'm gonna try something really weird, and see what I can get at the summit. Where those damn Aquas are right now. Whoopsies, a Cradily. But it's a female, so I could potentially find a Corsola (yeah right) and breed the two so the offspring knows recover. Or I'm just getting ahead of myself. But what did Claire get ahead of?
Bellsprout (summit), Doduo (summit), Clefairy (summit), Snorlax (summit), Jolteon (side), Celebi (side), Ivysaur (side), Abra (inside), Octillery (inside), Latias (inside), Kadabra (inside), Natu (inside), Charmander (inside). Curse it all, the one time I bring Shermie to put something to sleep, and I could've potentially caught a legend.
Well, at least the Pokedex is telling me that I can possibly catch a Latios somewhere at the beginning of the ocean opening, so Shermie's definitely sticking around for that.

Never understood why Castform didnt change during a sandstorm, it wouldve made it that much better of a pokemon

hmm....im hesitant to name this one. maybe if someone else would, otherwise go ahead and name it yourself.
btw, what do you do with pokemon you put up for naming grabs? i mean, do you just name it something random, then go rename it later, or just not name it at all until you get a name?

i dont know man, i think Latios are usually harder to get to appear, so dont get your hopes up

Now that I can easily fly to the name rater, I don't name it, then when I get a name, I fly over and name it. But uh, I named him Zappa. Anyway...
Last time I left off, I went scaling the inside of Mt. Pyre. Experience and such. Also had my first encounter with the dreaded Wobbufett. Also encountered a Wailord, so now I can track them on the Pokedex. And it looks like Route 123 is my last hope. So let's cover that route before going after Team Magma.
ROUTE 123 CATCH: that, or a Beldum. Well I came prepared nonetheless, despite its catch rate of abysmal 3. A sleeper and 20 ultra balls. Can I take it down before it takes itself down? Nope. Fuck my luck. Shermie evolved though. Other guys that did not have self-destructive tendencies included:
Whiscash, Dustox, Pichu, Beedrill, Fearow, Ludicolo, Sentret, Zangoose, Poliwrath, Sableye by surf, Vigoroth by surf, Pidgey by fishing, Zigzagoon by fishing. Hmm, maybe I needed a super rod to get that Wailord.
MAGMA HIDEOUT CATCH: a Geodude. Adam. Hm, this area may also be unaffected by the randomizer. Let's see...
Geodudes, Gravelers, and Torkoals. Yep. So going through the hideout, I'm reminded of some of the funny dialogue. Two grunts that have the worst guard positions and are aware of it, another who doesn't share Maxie's vision all too well...yeah.
Finally arrived in Lilycove after skipping a bunch of trainers on route 121. I'll get to them later, but for now, May's in the way of the department store. Beat her easy like last time, but I really need to get the TM for flamethrower. Fire blast and overheat can go piss off, because I need that reliability. Time to head backwards anyway. For trainers, and...
SAFARI ZONE CATCH: ho boy, where to look...let's look back in the far corner where the only way to access it is through mach bike. No pokeblocks with me either, so it's on now. It was a Smoochum. That fled the first moment it got. Dammit. Safari Zones have never been good to me in every nuzlocke I've ever done...also, I'm not going to scan the entire area for what I could've gotten. It's just too big.
LILYCOVE CITY CATCH: surfing, it's an Oddish. Beh. This guy can be a toss-up. The costal city also held:
Silcoon, Hypno by fishing, Dusclops by fishing (dammit).
I'll body Team Aqua next time. Also, this happened in my 5th trick house visit.

MAGMA HIDEOUT CATCH: a Geodude. Adam. Hm, this area may also be unaffected by the randomizer. Let's see...
Geodudes, Gravelers, and Torkoals. Yep.
hmm, thats odd, an area not affected by the randomizer? wow, thats weird

The Mirage Tower was also unaffected, as is Mirage Island. I'm also expecting the Aqua Hideout to be unaffected, too.
yeah, i'd take flamethrower over fire blast every single time
Actually, now that I think about it, it's mostly hit-and-run with this kind of game, so maybe I can have both flamethrower AND overheat.
lol fuck, what did you answer the first time around? and did you get it correct, or did you have to re-answer it?
I actually remembered the default answer. Tailow, I believe. Now then.
Team Aqua made off with the submarine, so I had to chase them back to their hideout. Which turns out can't have any encounters. Not even with fishing. Then I remembered there were those Electrodes that guard the master ball. But then the one I tried going for blew up on me. Dammit.
ROUTE 124 CATCH: fishing...I find a Smeargle. Ass. While Georgia does have that extensive movepool, it's gonna take forever to get a good one, let along find a way to teach her things like spore and baton pass. 124 also had:
Corphish by fishing, Spinarak by fishing, Clefairy by fishing, Baltoy by surf, Golduck by surf. Man, either this pokedex sits on a throne of lies, or it was another issue where I needed the super rod to attempt to catch Latios. Maaaaaan.
MOSSDEEP CITY CATCH: well, it's either I do this or wait until after I complete the game to get a Beldum. Welp, super rod away...shit, another Registeel. One that's 3 levels away from not knowing explosion. I'm out. I could've gotten:
Seadra by fishing, Mewtwo by fishing, Pupitar by fishing, Armaldo by fishing (that actually makes sense), Articuno by fishing, Loudred by surf, Abra by surf. Yeah, this town dicked me over, too.
ROUTE 125 CATCH: fishing once again, I get...an Azurill. Eugh, no thanks. There was also:
Sunflora, Murkrow, Furret by fishing, Meganium by fishing, Latias by fishing. Note to self: start using the "weaker" rods when fishing in new areas...but if there's anything interesting to add here, Nikola almost got killed by some guy's Machamp after his preceding Manectric roared out his partner in for Atlas Rex. There was a sandstorm, Nikola got a defense drop, and a Vital Throw almost killed him. He really would've had something to answer for due to having mistaken me for throwing "garbage" in the ocean.
SHOAL CAVE CATCH: please don't let me down here. See, I'll even explore the cave like normal rather than look in the waters...OH COME ON, another Smeargle. (P)ass. Oh cave, why have you forsaken me by also having:
Ampharos, Persian, Kirlia, Slakoth by surf, Fearow by surf, Lugia by fishing, Mantine by fishing, Furret by fishing.
Yeah, tonight was ass.

Youre gonna need at least 3 heart scales for it to have a full move set. Never liked smeargle for that exact reason

You couldve always done the thing where you send out the first pokemon, then immediately switch in another pokemon so the first one gets some of the experience. and if you get the exp share, he'll get even more.

are the weaker rods really showing better pokemon catches than the stronger rods? but theyre lower levels though, so maybe it might not be worth it...

Been busy, despite being on summer vacation. Also, making this a quickie to show that neither the nuzlocke nor I are dead.
So I'm training in the Mossdeep gym, and I just realized how much of an obsession this place has with double battles. It's not just the gym leaders; every trainer in the gym gives an opportunity for a double battle, depending on the way the place is traversed. But that's fine, because the Atlas Rex/Rodriguez combination made them pretty much free exp. Wish I could say the same for the leaders, for I can expect another weather war with them. So let's go exploring for a bit first.
ROUTE 127 CATCH: surfing...Graveler. Come on, I already have Adam the Geodude. Screw this. Other possibilities:
Pichu by fishing AND surfing, Manectric by fishing and surfing, Abra by surfing, Roselia by fishing, Electrike by fishing, Aron by fishing. Yeah, surfing sucks.
ROUTE 126 CATCH: fishing with the old rod...Nidorina. Whatever, Rita. Also appearing:
Sableye, Groudon (why), Skarmory by fishing (come on...) Primeape by fishing, Weedle by fishing, Oddish by fishing. Man, the one time I give up on searching by surf, and a titan shows up. gootecks_tosses_stick.mov

Yeah, since the Gym Leaders are twins and double battle with each other, they make it so that the rest of the gym is the same way. kinda makes sense though

Good luck with that one. From what I remember that was a very hard gym leader battle which usually took me a couple of tries. I'm betting you're going to get one or two killed here.
By the way, which six pokemon do you (mainly) have in your party right now?

Actually, my first normal nuzlocke through this went alright without any casualties. It helped that I had a grass type with solarbeam when they put the sun up. But given that the grass type I have is Rodriguez the Cacturne, who has pretty crummy defenses (also not worth teaching solarbeam either), let's see how this goes now.
By the way, which six pokemon do you (mainly) have in your party right now?
Oh yeah, forgot to do a recent team update. Here's everyone before I face the gym, all at level 39.
- John II/Swampert
- Atlas Rex/Tyranitar
- Shade/Xatu
- Rodriguez/Cacturne
- Nikola/Electabuzz
- Rychard/Ninetales
So here we go. John II and Shade are leading off, because John's just good, and Xatu has the reflect. Unfortunately, John died right off the bat in a combination of Earthquake and calm mind psychic. Then Rodriguez died after a surprise flamethrower from the Solrock. Shit, I got overconfident...there was a bit of a weather war going on, then Rychard fell next to the Lunatone that built up several calm minds. Then Nikola went down to a critical boosted psychic after getting up a light screen. Shade and Atlas Rex pushed through with Nikola's final memento of a light screen. Oh my god, you were right...John, Rodriguez, Rychard, and Nikola are now dead, which puts me far behind on where I need to be.
John II the Swampert, 2-39
Rodriguez the Cacturne, 5-39
Rychard the Ninetales, 23-39
Nikola the Electabuzz, 20-39
Eugh, hang on while I get who I need up to par. I'll let you know who's coming along now on the next post.

Quick, non-specific update. Grinding isn't very interesting after all. New team as of now:
Xatu/Shade, lv. 42
Tyranitar/Atlas Rex, lv. 40
Cradily/Claire, lv. 32
Vaporeon/Costner, lv. 28
Nidoqueen/Rita, lv. 24
Teddiursa/Lulu, lv. 18
Claire leveled up easy in the wide ocean thanks to giga drain. Would be nice if the PP buff happened in generation 3 though. Not even a PP max (giga drain maxes out at 8 uses) could help it much. I'm also trying to get some proper EV spreads down, but I doubt that's really going to happen.
Catches:
Mightyena/Serina, sassy, route 128
Golbat/Derek, impish, route 129
Eevee/Leon, mild, route 130
Latios/Xander, adamant, route 131
Cacturne/Maria, quirky, Pacifidlog Town
Oh my god, JC, a legendary! This one almost stayed in an ultra ball, but because it broke out too many times, it forced my hand in catching it in a master ball. Oh, and he showed up in a super rod. Remember that one time I figured I ought to start with the weaker rods in new routes?

I assume youre talking about the Latios. First of all, Congrats! Nice catch! Second of all, I thought you already passed all the routes that housed Latios? Apparently not from the looks of it though. Lastly, how come you arent using it in your main team? Also, sucks that you had to use the Master Ball...

Nothing interesting, aside from a Zapdos on 128. Also, yeah, I've been forgetting to leave a name up for grabs. There's the Seafloor Cavern, Cave of Origin, and Sky Pillar coming up soon, so there we go.

I swapped him out with Shade recently, with similar typing and all. But it turns out Latios wasn't done just yet.

I was waiting on training him until I cleared the Magmas out of the space center so I could go diving for shards and then evolve him, but then I saw a thunder stone lying around in my PC box, so I used that on him. I need a good matchup for the upcoming water types.
Alright then. In my midst of training, the area with the currents is a whole three different routes, meaning three different guys are up for grabs.
Vileplume/Raphael, bold, on route 132
Sneasel/Curare, impish, on route 133
Lunatone/Conan, jolly, on route 134
Also, I fished up Ryder the jolly Swellow in Slateport because I forgot to do that the first time. Again, nothing else very interesting aside from the Bellosom on the same route Raphael was caught in. And now that I feel that the necessary team members are up to par, let's move on.
The Magmas took over the space center, and it was down to Steven and me taking on Maxie and the other admin. Atlas Rex led alongside Steven's steel-types. Things were going okay as Tabitha got bodied, but then Maxie's Camerupt came out. Steven's team got smashed by his earthquakes, but I was okay with that because Xander has levitate and all. But then again, his Skarmory was flying-type, so he was reduced to that. It was still okay though, because his Crobat was free. So I got dive and made Gramps (Relicanth) my dive slave.
UNDERWATER CATCH: a Zubat of all things. Helen can get boxed right now, because I'm also a bit annoyed that I could've had an Altaria. Oh well, time to go diving for shards, pearls, and other stuff.
So in short, team as of now:
Tyranitar/Atlas Rex, lv. 41
Vaporeon/Costner, lv. 38
Cradily/Claire, lv. 36
Sandslash/Rosie, lv. 30
Jolteon/Leon, lv. 28
Latios/Xander, lv. 38

SEAFLOOR CAVERN CATCH: now this is an interesting cave. First thing that shows up is a Gengar. Caught her right before the sandstorm blew her away. I'll leave this one up for grabs. Want to know what else made this cave interesting?
Donphan, Dragonair, Electabuzz, Cascoon, Poliwag, Swampert by surfing, Salamence by surfing, Kingler by fishing, Dustox by fishing, Sableye by fishing. Hey, remember when I had a Swampert and Electabuzz?
Off to fight Archie. First things first, gotta have that sandstorm. Also, I never mentioned how much I hate swagger. There's the yellow flute, but sheesh, self-inflicted damage from increased attack power is never fun. Claire had to finish off his Mightyena after Atlas Rex gained a dangerous set of attack boosts. Crobat was free. Sharpedo took a few turns, but he clearly did not know his matchup against Claire.
So now Groudon and Kyogre are duking it out in Sootopolis, which is where I'll be next. Oh right, I can catch something here, too.
SOOTOPOLIS CITY CATCH: a toss of the super rod gets me...a Staryu. Meh, I do have a water stone, so Fuma can be on backup later, I guess. Other possibilities:
Gardevoir by fishing, Marill by fishing, Ponyta by fishing. Nothing much here.
CAVE OF ORIGIN CATCH: Mareep. Pah. This one can be a tossup as well. What else do we have?
Gardevoir (again?), Sunkern, Cubone, Celebi. Dammit.
SKY PILLAR CATCH: Dustox? How about no. Bad luck reared its head by also showing:
Lotad, Lombre, Gastly, Donphan, Dragonair, Magcargo, Charmander, Elekid, Primeape. I mean, it's not like I was gonna catch the lv. 70 Rayquaza any time soon because Xander didn't stay in that ultra ball...

Gengar eh? Lets name it Raiden
Donphan, Dragonair, Electabuzz, Cascoon, Poliwag, Swampert by surfing, Salamence by surfing, Kingler by fishing, Dustox by fishing, Sableye by fishing. Hey, remember when I had a Swampert and Electabuzz?
Aw, poor guys....

Mareep? Name it Raymond i suppose. Celebi huh? ouch...

Are you allowed to catch the Rayquaza? Wasnt sure if the nuzlocke rules allowed you to

Forgot to mention this was a girl, too. So I went with a feminine counterpart, Ramona. I did stick with the name you gave Gengar though.

Sure. After you've awoken it, you can head back, just use a bunch of repels to get everything else out of the way, and there you go. There are some Nuzlocke rules that disallow legendaries, but I'm just using the basic two. I do have a Latios after all.
Speaking of Latios, let's go take on Juan. Oh my god, Juan was so free. Leon zapped his Luvdisc, which prompted him to bring out Whiscash next. I took advantage of the fact that he had no ice beam or blizzard, and had Xander set up calm minds on him. Not even his +6 special defense from Amnesia could help him. From then on out, it was just a rushdown. Kingdra was really the only scary one, being at lv. 46, which goes to show how much training I need to do for the Elite Four.
EVER GRANDE CITY CATCH: surfing gets me...a Kabutops. Interesting. But I'll leave this one for a tossup. IT'S A GUY THIS TIME. Now what?
Croconaw, Flygon by fishing, Slugma by fishing, Parasect by fishing, Unown by fishing, Zubat by fishing. Not bad.
VICTORY ROAD CATCH: this is it. Last catch of the pre-league game. And it's yet another fossil, Omanyte. And then he got knocked out by an accidental crit. Well that's rather underwhelming. Also appearing:
Gyarados, Pinsir, Kingdra, Magikarp (wat), Kangaskhan, Lombre...oh, hang on, Wally decided to make his appearance. That caught me off guard first time playing Emerald. He was SUPPOSED to show up at the back of the cave as he did in R/S. Oh well, brushed him aside pretty easily. Anyway, Sharpedo, Corphish, Crawdaunt, Articuno (WAT), Charmander, Abra, Tyrogue, Gligar, Masquerain by fishing, Hitmonlee by fishing, Qwilfish by fishing, Spearow by surf, Chinchou by surf.
Unfortunately, Leon didn't make it. A crit Shadow Ball from a trainer's Sableye killed him after he failed to knock it out with a thunderbolt.
Leon, 20-38
I'll let Ramona take up the mantle as the electric type. Looks like I've got a lot of making up to do again...

Awesome, make sure you do that then.

Ah, thats helpful, tell the gender each time, otherwise it'll get confusing. Hows about Riley?

Wow, that kinda sucks
