Could you tell me more about the edge detection problem so I could try to help you.

Wow some awesome stuff coming up now :D all your games are looking great!

I've added a few new things to mine Like physics with some objects and some small stuff like for example, when you collect 100 coins you gain an extra life and then the score resets to 0. also same applies when you die, except of course you loose a life then.

Still thinking of the main goal for these little animal to strive for other than explore and collect coins. I was thinking about making them treasure hunters where they have to collect pieces of an item from each scene and once they're all collected they can progress onto the next set of stages.. But I have a problem with actors (like coins and 1ups) re-spawning every time you re-enter a scene (you can backtrack through stages to give that open world feel) so I need away for the actors to be destroyed for good once collected.

Another idea was to make them strays who have to search for food. But they're on a time limit and once the clock reaches 0, they loose a life. So I scatter some food around the map and whenever you collect some the time is bumped up a little. Making it more of a survival game.

but again, I'm still unsure. But I can wait until I have all my stages while I figure out an ultimate goal. any ideas welcome.

ALSO I want to make some enemy AI. I'm making saw blades and I want them to move at random on their own.. so I figure the best way to go about it is to give them normal enemy AI and some push back and damage upon contact. Does anyone know where I can find a decent tutorial on this? I've tried some enemy packs in the stencyl forge but none of them seem to work properly :c.

here's a screen shot of some physics n stuff :] I look forward to seeing some more progression of your games! :D

I've never used Stencyl before, but this seems like as good an excuse as any to give it a try!

I have an idea on the backburner that I've never felt comfortable working on with anyone since it has a bit of a personal touch. I think I might do a warm-up game first though. Something small and simple just to learn the basics of the software, then if that works out I'll dive into my bigger idea :)

I think there is an Edge Detection behavior on StencylForge but I haven't tried it myself. You could make a couple sensors that follow the actor on ground level that check for tile collisions.

thanks for the tip, but i allready tried that one, and tried every logical modification to it i could think of... it just diddnt work sadly. ivee seen alot of people complaining about that behaviour on the forum since it seems its outdated safter stencyl got upgraded. if someone could make the fix for it and re-upload it however, that would be great!

Does anyone one know how to effectively use the" follow path" behaviour? I'm trying to program a fighting pattern but it does not seem to move. Yes, I added in the coordinates.

Based on the Stencylpedia, there's the option to start a project with code mode, as opposed to the drag and drop design mode. There doesn't seem to be the possibility to switch between them once you've already started a project. Since my programming experience does not include AS3 currently, I can't tell you more xD

Can I use music I've made previously? I started working on the art, writing, design, and coding in mid May, but I've got some music I made like a couple years ago I want to repurpose for my game. Can I do that, or does EVERYTHING have to be done in the May-July timeframe?

It doesn't move at all? Did you enter a speed next to the coordinates? I had this exact same problem, and it SAYS that you can leave it blank and use a default speed... but it doesn't seem to move if you only enter coordinates. *shrug* I just messed with it a second ago and that's how I got it to work - entering a speed. If that's not it, maybe there's another bit of code or a behavior that contradicts with the follow path behavior?

Now my own question, which I asked on the Stencyl forum as well, but I'm impatient... How can you code something that makes the scene change when ALL actors are in ANY region? I'm trying to make a little mini puzzle in my game, where the player will drag a star to a region to make a constellation. I set up regions that play a sound to notify the player that the placement is correct. I know how to make a scene change when a specific actor enters a specific region, but how can I make the scene change when all the stars in the right place - that is, all 7 stars are in any of the 7 regions?

Without knowing how exactly your game/code works, I'ma take a shot in the dark. This might not be the most elegant solution, but it should work.

You should have a variable (or in Stencyl terms, an attribute) that counts how many stars are in the correct place. Every time the player puts a star in a region, increment the variable by 1. Everytime the player removes a star from a region, decrement the variable by 1. The scene will change when the variable equals however many regions/stars there are that the player has to move to win.

Alternatively, you could have a list of booleans corresponding to however many stars there are that the player can move, and when the whole list reads "true" or something, change scene.

Looks like in order for my game to work properly, I'll need to learn some AS3 after all. Fun times!

Anyone care to give me some code design pointers? Or is it basically the same as any other coding language?

And if anyone cares, the API for Stencyl's stuff can be found here.

I ended up abandoning my first idea. It wasn't anything special or original. Maybe I'll come back to it some day. But I decided to do something I can have a little more fun with.
My new idea isn't very creative either, but I think I can breathe some real life into it and make it more enjoyable.

Does anyone know how I could add little cutscenes?
Or maybe if I can import my game in segments into Flash or something, with the animated cutscenes made in Flash in between. I've never tried anything like that, but I think importing a swf file can be done.

You can add a pre-coded behaviour to your game's Scenes called "Video Player"; if you go to the behaviour screen for the scene you want the video/cutscene to play in, add a new one and under the section 'from your library' there should be a Utilities category. This should have the video player behaviour in; it allows you to play FLV files and hopefully add cutscenes to your game.

Update: "1995 The Flash Game"

ARTIST WANTED

So I'm still working like mad on my unofficial 'sequel' to George Orwell's "1984". I've come a long, long way in terms of story, mechanics, and layout. However, there's one area that's really holding me back. I need an artist, and the sooner the better. I'm working on Alpha v2.2 and something other than my horribly rushed placeholder graphics would be nice. I check Newgrounds almost daily and I'm an active user of skype, Google+, my actual yahoo e-mail, etc. It's very easy to keep in contact with me and I'd be able to provide constant updates on the game's progress.

PLEASE RESPOND VIA PM IF INTERESTED FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Hy everyone! I would like to ask something here:

I'm working on a Stencyl game which I want to nominate to Stencyl Jam 2012. However, probably this game will need a lot of time to finish, so my plan is that I'll nominate only a demo version with 8 levels from the planned 40. Is it allowed/is it OK, or I'd rather just forget the competition with this game?

I don't see why you couldn't do what you planned. However, depending on what those 8 levels offer, it might not do very well.

I'll find out the content of the demo when I'll be closer to the deadline. Thanks for helping, now I know that it's worth to try.

Hi, I have a question also.
So my group for the game jam used stencyl, but we didn't finish in time for the jam, so we are finishing it up now.
Is it okay for our leader/lead programmer to enter it in the competition as his 2nd entry, or would we have to enter it under a different user in our group?

I think there is no problem to enter in the competition with a second entry :)

Is there an official answer about this point?
Are more than 1 entry allowed?

Or is it just allowed because there isn't the rule "just 1 entry" is written down?

I'm really unsure about that.
