Tox is thrown off a cliff 2012-04-29 14:14:55

...with an initial velocity of 11.0 m/s. The cliff has a height of 600m.

How long does it take for him to reach the ground, assuming acceleration stays constant and g=9.8ms^2?

Bonus: What is his horizontal displacement?

I wish I paid more attention in science. How fat is Tox?

The statement below this is false.
The statement above this is true.

So is he thrown straight down or kinda in an arc upwards, or is he thrown horizontally

I only know enough classical mechanics to figure it out in the first case (and there can't be any air either)

Assume there is no air resistance and he is thrown horizontally.

I think that since the acceleration stays constant,he's weight is useless.

damnit I guess I need parametric equations n shit for this then

anyway if you just throw him down he should land after 14.6 seconds

The equation is unsolvable. No solution.

Why? I can't imagine there are several possible paths through which he could travel... it would be a parabola wouldn't it?

The horizontal displacement of his flimsly limbs that detached from him or his main body? I wish I'd cared more about physics.

Trick question: Tox is too much of a bad ass to allow himself to be thrown off a cliff. He would instead counter the person's attempt to throw him, making them the one who is falling from the cliff, not Tox.

Reread it carefully: starting at 11m/s, from a height of 600m, and gravity at 9.8ms^2, how long does it take Tox to hit the ground?

We need to know Tox's height in order to accurately gauge the exact time and place he will hit the ground (for example, someone 5'6" would hit the ground .0003 seconds later than someone of a height of 5'7"). The shorter they are, the longer it will take them to hit, even if they are going the same speed all the way down.

Explain why it's not solvable instead of telling me to read it again like a prick.

Tox has a parachute so we need to know air resistance, his weight, and the surface area of the parachute and how it reacts to the air (Calculus III)

okay I am not sure at all but the time should be about 7.8 seconds and about 85 meters of horizontal displacement

either that or the time is 11.1 seconds and the horizontal displacement is somewhere closer to 121 meters. I didn't know if I had to include a factor of 1/2 in acceleration or not

Is one of these correct Comrade?

Okay, okay. I was being a smartass. OP didn't type the equation correctly; it read as 9.8 meters TIMES seconds squared instead of meters PER second squared, which would render the units inconvertible and the equation unsolvable.

Can you give us his mass/weight so we can figure out how much kinetic energy he is while falling, as well?

Hey um... instead of doing math let's just throw him off a cliff. Oh wait never mind. I forgot I don't hate him.

It would have happened by the time I replied to this thread so it is no longer an important thing to determine.

11.06 seconds. His horizontal displacement? 122 metres.
