So is the video feature just for animations that are turned to video because of file issues? I'd love to put my short film up, but I assume you guys are trying to avoid the Youtube effect and keep it strictly for animation purposes.

The thing is, a lot of animators throw their files into Adobe After Effects to get some special effects that flash can not replicate as well. This means that they are stuck working with a movie file rather than an SWF. It allows for better animations to be submitted at a higher quality with better effects.

Line from Tom's post:

The MP4 upload feature is invite-only at the moment to avoid an all-out video dumpfest.
The MP4 upload feature is invite-only at the moment
at the moment

Implying that it won't always be invite only, and will eventually be open to everyone.

OBJECTION!

OF course it's a person without pones in their signature who doesn't realize that manly-chickens post CLEARLY STATES "WHEN THE VIDEO UPLOAD FEATURE GOES PUBLIC". We BOTH Acknowledged the fact that it's not public now.

Except you didn't mention that at all in your post. Further more, you can submit blogs now if you import the video into SWF and submit it to the portal, yet I don't see anyone doing it.

With the introduction of flash mods that can remove content it will be a non issue.

Use your brain.

Until the site starts getting really popular that is. I predict that the implementation of this feature will attract lots of 3D artists from all over the net. sure they could post their awesome 3d stuff on youtube, where it probably won't get noticed, or they could post it here where it most certainly will get noticed (if its good)... People who know that their stuff is good want to get it noticed, so they'll start coming here because we care more about this kind of stuff.

Tom, you just need to get the word out once this goes public and you'll get a shit ton of traffic coming your way.

Truly the perfect movie to premiere the new video format with!!

Will we be seeing some Newgrounds classics, like the Adam Phillips Dashkin movies, switched out into this new format so we can enjoy them in glorious 1080p full screen?

Glad Newgrounds is pushing forward with the limits of Flash as always.

1080p is nice and all, hopefully there will be something less extravagant in the future for us Slower Speeded Internetters.

It's kinda weird.
I'm so used to going to a new tab to let the flash file load, then clicking play after 10-30 seconds.

Well I'm probably not going to use this, I'm going to stick to .swf for the meantime. Maybe if I get a computer that can run After Effects CS5 I'll learn it and start using video files but what ever.

The main reason I'm excited for this is cos we can finally enjoy stuff which has been done in After Effects at full HD quality :D

its damn awesome,
and Starbarians looked incredible
Im already breaking my lil music video into two flas because flash keeps farting. So yah video is the only way to go if you want to fbf and filter rape like I do ;3

and hopefully the video option will never go fully public, people just can't be trusted. Im guessing there will always be some kind of approval process to make sure its some form of allowable animation before anything goes live.

This is excellent. Now it'll be easier for me to upload my stop motion animation videos, since they require me to use a video editor to create them, not flash.

Seriously a big help.

Well it is awesome that we're now getting new formats and the possibility of videos being accepted here on Newgrounds. Would love to see what filmmakers can bring to the table here, since they can probably get better attention here than YouTube since it is plagued with vlogs, review shows, and the occasional whiner.

So awesomeness for Newgrounds.

I need a quality button too, I've been waiting about 30 mins and it's half loaded. :3 Worth the wait for Starbarians, sure, but not for regular browsing.

I think most internet 1080p still has some kind of compression because I've never waited quite so long for a video before. I'm sure you guys can figure it out though.

NOTE: Starbarians is by HappyHarry, my name appearing is a bug that was triggered by me hitting PUBLISH on his project. 'doh!

They were both uploaded as MP4 files and are playing in our new video player! Starbarians originally consisted of three SWFs, too big to compile as one file. HappyHarry used Swivel, software developed by Mike to perform the best-ever SWF to video conversions. It's full framerate, 1080p (try fullscreen mode) and it even merged his individual SWF files on the fly. Swivel is still in the testing phase but we'll be releasing it to the public when it's all polished up!

The MP4 upload feature is invite-only at the moment to avoid an all-out video dumpfest. The focus is on animated content and the occasional film with cool post-production, like if MindChamber ever makes his MindChamber movie. If you have an animation that doesn't work well as a traditional SWF, PM me.

Everyone else, enjoy the show! If the video doesn't work for you, let us know. For some reason Adblocker in Firefox might block it from loading so try turning that off if you have problems. We're looking into what could be causing that.

The Newgrounds Annual Tournament of Animation (NATA) open round starts tomorrow (MONDAY)! If you have any interest in animation be sure to give it a shot. I'll update this post with a link when it goes live in the Animation Forum.

We've been having some other issues where the video simply never loads - that might be the problem you're experiencing. Starbarians is 88 megs which should be manageable for anyone with broadband. Slow computers running 1080p video is another issue though. I liked to think we were late enough to arrive with video that we wouldn't need to cater to all the smaller formats for slower computers / connections... But then I know mobile people especially will likely want smaller versions... BARF.

That happened to me when I first opened Starbarians, but I refreshed and the video loaded just fine.
