If within "classical" you're also talking about ALL orchestral music, you're plain wrong.
If you're composing for pleasure/hobby, there is no reason to abandon a style of music or mindset/genre that you like, classical included.
If you're planning a career as a classical composer (NOTE: this is different than a composer for media), then yes this might be true. At least, you'll need to get a job as a professor or something similar to supplement your income and allow your classical composition to continue.
