PAX Wrap-Up, Inspirational Stuff Apr. 9th, 2012 @ 06:47 PM Reply

I spent this past weekend in Boston for PAX East and left feeling especially energized. Beyond the biggest turnout yet at the biggest Behemoth booth ever, I got to have lots of great conversations with NG regulars and fans. It was especially inspiring to see people from NG involved with a number of gaming upstarts represented at PAX. Some examples:

D-Mac-Double - Voice and voice casting for Dust (see gameplay video)
Rete - Design for Guacamelee.
Lefthandedsock - Character animation for Not Without You.

Other NG folks in attendance included Rog from I-Mockery, GoatmanGADs, Kirbopher, KevinButtchin, ImpendingRiot, Manly-Chicken, Nalem, Spanio, Squidly, MysticShinHanKu, XenonMonkey, EhFilms and Starberry.

There's a real network of talent that has evolved over the years. Animators such as Egoraptor, HappyHarry, Oney and Psychicpebble are becoming increasingly famous, while on the gaming front Edmund and Tommy found huge success with Meat Boy and now Glaiel-Gamer and Starogre have released Closure. Musicians such as XKore and Kingbastard are huge and the NG musicians who came together to form Symphony of Specters are producing the soundtracks for tons of games. Now you'll be hearing various NG voice talent in Dust for XBLA, not to mention more Stamper than you could ever imagine in Battleblock Theater.

Talking to people at PAX, I realize a lot of them are feeling the same way I've been feeling this past year. Anxiety over the increasing rate of change and growing number of platforms. Fear of not keeping up, fear of losing relevancy, fear of disappointing, fear of competition. But everyone had such great things to say about their experience with NG and everyone is pushing ahead with their work.

I just think we have something really special going on here. It's true that NG is trying to do a lot of things at once, maybe too many things, but I think we have built a lot of strength by doing so. Being amazing at one thing will only get you so far as the world keeps moving forward; you're gonna need to know people who's talents compliment your own. That's the sort of thing we have going on here, amazing people in every category, coming together to create something bigger than any one part. It's true that a lot of the web has been consolidated between Facebook and YouTube, but we all know where the real heart and soul of the Internet is. It has all been happening here from the beginning and it's going to keep happening here for as long as people are passionate about creating and passionate about what we have going on here.

Thank you everyone who came by to say hi and talk at PAX!

You underestimate my capacity to imagine Stamper.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to get back to the booth Tom! I have much to learn about these things. Panel lines are time killers.

Promising stuff. I think NG has always been this isolated island for many years, that has its good and bad points, and its always been a struggle to move beyond that but i think with the growth of the indie presence both in the game and animation/entertainment scene it puts the site in a good position. It feels like the 11+ years harvesting and nurturing talent is yielding grand benefits for the people who stuck around.

Kinda makes me sad to not have made it out to boston, but this sort of news report is a good shot in the arm and puts things in perspective.

I wish there will be a Behemoth booth for example at the gamescom in Cologne anytime. Or any other occassion to meet up in Germany. :P

I am sure some dutch users would also take a trip over there if the Behemoth was present.

And yeah, it's great to see well-known NG artists having success in the game industry. I hope that's a trend that will continue.

You put that perfectly. Like many others, I wouldn't be nearly as motivated to work as hard as I do on my projects if it weren't for the payoff of putting it on NG. What's great about this site (contrary to facebook or youtube) is it is a site solely dedicated to artists, so the people giving feedback (for the most part) can give you pointers from an artistic standpoint. Yes, there are some trolls, but overall, this is still the best networking site for artists...by a landslide. Keep doing what you do Tom, and we'll all keep doing what we do. Newgrounds shall never die.

To be honest, I had no idea you were there... But if it means anything, a friend of mine created the four original Crasher helmets. I was wearing the green one. Not sure who, but some one at the booth happened to run over to me and give me a squishy chicken. Regardless to whomever it was, thanks. :3

It's amazing how there seems to be "almost" no talent left in Hollywood, T.V. completely sucks ass, and AAA games seem to get more depressing and greedy every year (not to mention they are targeting none gamers more than gamers), yet NEOGEO oozes talent, creativity and generosity.
