I really want to have an intelligent discussion about sports games, so no arguments that include "why don't you just play the real thing?". Also, no obvious remarks about how sports games are simply cash cows. This is about the people who play them and why. I'll start.
Do we really need to buy a new 40$-60$ game each year that includes minimal improvements? I'd argue no. Why not start of with bi annual releases, or atleast have DLC with roster updates and minor bugs.
I also don't understand people who treat each annual entry as an entirely different game. They are willing to pay 60% on a game that is the same as the last year, and just because of some graphical updates they treat it as a new game.
Opinions?

I just can't conceive a way to state my opinion without mentioning how the games are cash cows, especially with the arguments you yourself provided.

I agree with you, I don't think there needs to be a yearly release. Rather, i think dlc should provide the roster updates. In my opinion the next actual game shouldn't come out until there is a noticeable improvement on the games engine or something. Then again, I couldn't care less about sports games. Somebody who does enjoy sports games might disagree with me.

The street series and burnout are the only sports games I ever cared for.

Yeah, im with you, i never really understood sports games. I mean, isnt it basically the exact same game, with maybe a few extra stuff thrown in each time?
I have one madden game for the gamecube, but thats only cuz i got it as a gift. i gave it one try, then got bored with it and never played it again.
Also, i assume youre talking real sport games, like madden and stuff like that, and not stuff like mario tennis and whatnot

there are people who enjoy playing sports games. there are also people who enjoy fighting games and racing games. these do not make up the majority of the market. it's not a big deal. some people just have different tastes.

I would like it if they are insisting on bi-annual releases but can't blame them if they always get good sales every year. There's very little from Sports games I'd ever touch and those are like SSX. At least with those kind of Sports games they are more in extreme conditions that not everyone could go out in the real life and start doing.

While I'm not a big fan of sports games being released every year, {who isn't?} it doesn't mean that some of them aren't good games. {see NHL '09 as an example.} I would imagine the reason why people would play sports games is pretty much the same reasoning for others liking the fighting, RPG or any other genre, they think it's enjoyable.
Personally, when I get any yearly sports game, I usually wait at least 2-3 years before I get another one in that franchise, considering they don't change a lot of things with the game itself apart from graphics and roster updates.
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

I would actually say tri-annual releases as I don't think they'll add much new in every bi-annual release either.
Despite the fact that I own a few sports games, I'm not really a big fan of them. Main reason being is that the gameplay often grows stale very quickly and is incredibly repetitive. Once you've played a few matches or done a few races you've basically done everything there is to do in the game already and once you get moderately good at them you'll win everything with ease anyway.

I don't like just about any sports game that has a year in the title. Others such as the Skate series and Forza (does that count) are pretty awesome.
