Turning off everything for an hour isn't going to fix anything.

Hell yeah, I'm going to turn on every light in my house so everyone can see that I am celebrating earth hour, then I am going to drive my 14 MPG gas guzzling truck around the neighborhood with my ultra-bright lights several times to make sure every one else is too

I'll unplug a bunch of stuff and turn some stuff off but I will not take a dump in the dark.

Let alone a few unnecessary lights.

Try convincing everyone to park and turn off their cars for an hour and see how that goes.

1 hour of a whole year then request people to do this. Considering people turn the majority of their electricity off for like 8 hours every day of the year while they sleep, it makes this attention whoring 60 minutes to be even more sad.

Where is the smartness, people? Turning off for 1 hour won't fix a shit. You are gonna end up using more than 1 hr electricity. Excluding sockets and networks overload since everyone turns the shit on at the same moment. Biggie!

Yeah. I could be wrong about this, but I think it's kind of silly that they're just aiming for everybody turning off the lights as that will really not make much of an impact at all. I don't know about the rest of the world, but I believe the majority of the people here use fairly low energy light sources already anyway (like LEDs and CFLs) making the influence even less.

Of course all the tiny bits will help, but I'm much more in favour of doing an annual global Car-Free Sunday. There's something that will have some decent impact, even if not everyone can/will participate.

When I celebrate Earth Day, I just go out and see the latest Disney nature documentary. Hey, I'm a huge fan of movies and it's probably at least more than the rest of you guys do to celebrate it! I didn't go so far as to view the video on that website, so maybe I can celebrate it by just breathing the wonderful air around me. That's a good way of showing your appreciatio for the Earth!

I may have put it wrong but this is straight from the facebook event page

'' The purpose of Earth Hour is to send a political signal to policymakers to take climate change seriously, and thereby draw attention and create an awareness of the issue. Earth Hour is not an energy conservation campaign. ''

While the focus on energy is important, although easily solvable if we didn't live in this money orientated commie heck-hole and while HRH Prince Charles is right to worry more about our forests, woods, etc, the main thing that we should concentrate on is cleaning up the ocean and the rivers.

While Gaia will balance herself out, that shit could get nasty real quickly.

The problem is that things like this don't really do much to raise awareness.

If anything, this does more harm than good with all of the ignorant people suddenly believing that they're environmental heroes who have accomplished something by turning a few lights off for one hour of one day and then spending the rest of the year doing absolutely nothing different.

The likelihood of this bringing about any legislative change is low considering this only shows that people really don't care about any type of conservation other than 25 hours of the year in which they feel obligated to.

If you care about conservation then the best thing you can do is contact your lawmakers and convince them to make stricter environmental laws. This will bring about actual change. Real change that won't be convenient enough to only occur during a predefined 25 hours

It's just a group of concerned people that care about the planet. It can't do any harm to turn off the lights for an hour. Those of you saying "it won't do anything" are the reason why it's just an Earth HOUR, because you're so pessimistic and fat that to ask for anything more than 60 minutes of turning off your computer is absurd.

I just realized something, this year, Earth Day is going to be on 420!

What better way to celebrate than by using the Earth's natural resources!

I hate this Earth Hour crap that these enviromentalists do every year. This really doesn't do anything in terms of power consumption overall, and all this climate change talk that was spearheaded by Green Peace, who consist of mostly warped eco-warriors, and Al Gore is nothing more than fear-mongering.

Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

Pointless campaign:

-Because businesses are TOTALLY going to do that.

- Forgetting those pesky Co2 spewing cars, trains and airplanes.

- because humanity really caresthat much.

- you might be saving money on your electric bill but your definitely not saving the world. Turn off as much as you want the North pole Ice caps are still melting.
