Looking to some recording bundles Mar. 19th, 2012 @ 06:39 PM Reply

Well I have been looking for some recording bundles so I can start doing my own recording for my songs. I've seen in a catalog some bundles and of those include:
Alesis IO2 express 24-bit recording interface.
Mxl Mca SP-1 Studio Condenser Microphone with clip.
Alesis M2-Active-320 Studio Monitor (Pair).
6 ft. dual 1/4 TRS to Dual 1/4.
Onstage microphone cable 20 Ft. XLR to XLR.
Adjustable Mic desk Stand.
Cubase LE Recording Software.
The package cost 240 bucks but I don't know if I can get something cheaper on the internet or in a store. Another thing is that if this package is good to start or I should get something better because right now I don't know anything about recording and I don't have any recording gear.

You haven't told us exactly what you intend to record.

That said, if you toss in an sm58, another mic cable/stand/clip and maybe a pop filter, you will be set for recording anything you might do with one or two dudes, and be out less than $400.

Could you get a cheaper start? Sure.

Tell us exactly what you intend to record to begin with and for the forseeable future, and we can tell you if you can get a better start, but that seems like a pretty solid package all around.

I am looking to record some bass, guitar, brass, violin, voice and percussion. That is all I own that can be recorded but of course If something else appear I would like to record it.

Definitely pick up an sm57/58 and cover your bases for any amplified instruments (you can experiment with dual mic setups, close-in dynamic and a condenser 12-18" back or so and get some super heavy guitars) and to be an excellent general purpose tool.

As far as percussion, it can be tricky to record a full set with less than 4 channels. You can try an overhead for the set (maybe use that condenser in the kit) and that sm57/58 as a kick mic... a lot of your success here will depend on the room. A good purchase in the future will be a basic drum mic kit and small mixer so you can mix it down to one or two channels to record with.

Personally, I'm thinking about picking up one of these interfaces, and I think that'd be a killer item to build a recording setup around. You could pick up that, one mic/stand/clip/cable/whatever and be set to get started, and add mics and external processors (it has an FX send, how cool is that?) at your leisure.

Really helpful and by the way that interface that linked down looks really great. Another question if I get some usb microphone and I record it directly to the computer and use Protools, do I need to get a mixer? Thanks for everything!

No, that's the whole point of putting the interface right into the microphone. It'll show up as a sound device you can select in whatever recording program you use.
