You forgot about the Mack Daddy Mario series, Tom. *tsk tsk*

Speaking of which, could we please have some of Randy's movies featured on the front page again? There would be no better tribute.

Man, just no. Seriously, I can't believe this. I never knew Randy personally, but it was thanks to him, that I found Newgrounds. I was hanging on his website and watching his cartoons, then found a link to this website...

I was always a fan of sprite cartoons and his "Rise of the MK" series are really inspirational. Damn it, 36 is too early.

It's a real shame...

I'm sure others have done this but I put a little nod of respect to Randy on my Facebook page. He was a great online Nemesis of mine, but also he gets a hell of a lot of respect from me. Even Cobra Commander would have been sad if Duke died.

Look if you guys want some kind of last hurrah to Randy I propose a flash contest. See Randy held Flash contests all the time back in the forum days. So I say there should be a flash contest with an entry fee and the winner receives a prize. All proceeds from the contest will go towards Rielle's Education Fund. The winner of the contest should receive of course a prize. Actually I would say any type of tribute Flash to any of Randy's Flashes including Curious George as well. The tribute you make does not have to be sprite based, it can be hand drawn. I dunno what do you think guys. Good idea?

Randy Solem deserves much credit in the sprite pioneering hes done in the past. He created flash animations beyond one(s) imagination and humor fit perfectly upon what he wanted to demonstrate. He was one of my favorite flash artist(s) in the early 00s.

Its good to see NG announcing and respecting fallen soldiers....

Ugh. Randy Solem is the reason I ever got into Flash. I remember the days circumventing the filter my parents installed to get to Video Game Director's Cut, ha ha. Heh, the guy had some stupid Flash movies, but some really awesome ones as well. May his influence live on forever, and my sincerest sympathies to his family.

I think you misunderstood my statement,. I dont care if you are the sensitive type or not. You replying on this thread with your troll back replies actually takes away from the thread and the situation in general. You're replies and bickering with these nobodies are actually more annoying than the posts they make.

I thought the post was actually asking if people were private messaging family members talking shit. I didn't think he was being sarcastic, so I answered it like I was answering a question. Did you not read my response? I thought he was legit asking, so my only response was "Yeah, douche bags like Kisame have gone out of their way to PM".

I didn't think I was feeding into any sort of baiting, I thought he was literally asking -_- Besides that, there's no other posts defending or arguing, just answering you the ONE time and then this time. So, not sure where my annoying posts are. One answer to him and one to you...

There's a few pages of your opinion on other artists based on posts in another thread, that I found particularly annoying, but Ill stop that here since I'd be guilty of derailing the thread in the same fashion as you have.

Aw MAN. I was such a huge fan of his work when I was younger! I loved all of his sprite animations, and they really made me interested in learning flash! His Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom series was freaking awesome!

Such a shame he's gone, I hope his daughter turns out okay. These situations are so delicate.

I discovered Newgrounds thanks to Randy's animations too. Also, I became a sprite animator for a short time, long ago inspired in his work. Shocking that he died so young. RIP.

From what I understand, he was planning a Zelda's animation (A Link to Chaos) and I think another one. Is possible that some family member send the files, storyboards and/or scripts from those projects to a close animator friend or group? Maybe those can still be finished somehow posthumously.

Hope that I didn't butchered the English language too much.

This is truly a tragedy. One dieing young when one has such great talent is always a horrible thing.
Considering how many people likely saw his movies and took advice to make their own... he really contributed here.
He'll be missed, that is for sure.

Probably most depressing, because I was just thinking of the first time I saw his flash animations a few days ago, and how they introduced me to this site. What an awful loss.

Randy Solem Tribute

I drew this as a tribute, I was going to wait and upload it with another thing I was making but that doesn't look like its going to be done for a day or two.

  • Randy Solem Tribute
    Randy Solem Tribute by deathink

Randy Solem, 1975-2012 Like many people I was drawn to NEWGROUNDS by Randy's "The Rise of the MK". The quality and his attention to detail still rivals modern flash animations today, and he created them a decade ago. I knew nothing more of Randy, and now I feel really bad that I never payed tribute to him while he was alive, I never got to tell him how great I thought his animations were, or that I automatically give any sprit animation staring mario a 5/5 because of him. I lost two close friends this year, I didn't talk to them that much anymore (I spend all my time trying to make something), I never got a chance to tell them how great I really thought they were as well. I beat my self up about it, I think "man, maybe if I was around more I could have done something to help...". Maybe they wouldn't have died if I had been in the picture, maybe they would have died sooner, who knows... maybe I would have died. Death is inevitable, you can't do anything to change that, so if you get a chance to tell someone how great you think they are, take it, because you may never get a chance again... Truly; M.B. DeathInk P.S. This picture is dedicated to Darrell John Bennett, George A. Moores, and Randy Solem. P.P.S. I was holding off uploading this because I have another tribute I was going to upload today too, but it looks like I will not be finished with it for another day or two, so stay tuned.

I noticed Jewelltoons was listed as dead in the memorial page.

That's horrible, I remember skipping class to watch all his movies once.

Jeez can we just scrap the teen years, they're responsible for more deaths than both the Aztecs and high speed motorways.

Hey everybody, I've lived next to Randy for about 7 years.....living in West Deptford half my life I never really realized how much I cared for him. His death broke me, I sat in my room for about an hour crying and ready to take my anger out on the wall. Then I had to suck it up for school......I will be attending his funeral on Friday, March 23, 2012. I've seen Rielle a few times, so young and already talking, and then there's Dylan, who looked up to Randy so much he was basically lil' Randy. Danielle, who must have been the most hurt. Danielle's mother lives on our block too, she suffered a heart attack just a few months back and Danielle's niece, Tailor (or Taylor, I really can't remember) lives with Danielle's mother. It's good for Dylan and Rielle because they can go there while Danielle is thinking things through. I am Bryce Enderle, close friend and neighbor of Randy Solem III.

I wish you all good luck! R.I.P, Randy Solem
