Wow, jesus christ. Just as his daughter's walking n talking, I guess it doesn't get much worse than that. Must feel like his wife (or hell, his whole family)'s just had the rug pulled right from under em. That's never gonna smooth over.
Not much I can say that can live up to the weight of that situation.
His first submissions here were in the year 2000, which was 12 years ago. So I guess he was about 24. I never really think of any of us having grown up and started a family- and especially not being dead- but I guess it's been a long enough time. I mean shit, even I must be about 4th or 5th generation, so what do I know?
A lot of what people blog about here is to do with ambitions, and setting up a more comfortable or more exciting life and future for themselves. Most news posts I read are about where people are going and what they're doing, taking big steps and feeling like you've always wasted time. I guess this guy sends a message that people have already lived this life and we're not the first men on the moon here. There's something about that that's really re-assuring and I think it's exactly what a lot of us need to hear.
Whatever you're doing, have fun with it. If you wanna make VGDC.com then go nuts, if you wanna not put out anything for 6 years, don't worry about it. Whether you're 14 or 24, we'll all end up with a house and wife n kids one day. Randy did.
Thanks for keeping a memoriam, Tom.
He was a creative soul and will be sorely missed. Rise of the MK brought many of us here in the first place.
It was Randy's videos that got me hooked on Newgrounds in the first place, way back in '05 and '06. I actually cannot believe this.
Rest In Piece.
Rest in Peace Randy. I feel sorry for his daughter, she's going to miss out on having an awesome father
I respond to every message!
Wow, I have been coming to Newgrounds since 2005. In 2005 I got a job as a web developer and internet advertiser and all around graphic designer in NYC, one day I was asked to just search the internet to look at what everyone else was doing (real original right), I was also encouraged to look for flash creations and I stumbled on to "rise of the MK" and was blow away! Since that day I would sneak and watch these sprite animations all day long, it seemed like they where personally made for me. I didn't know the site I kept coming to was newgrounds, all i knew was the site with a tank logo had these fucking awesome sprite animations, i didn't know the name of the site, i didn't know you could vote, i never heard of Tom, i didn't know anything about newgrounds except that if i typed Mario in that little yellow search bar the coolest animations i ever seen would pop-up, and "rise of the MK " was the best of them.
I never knew the creators name was Randy.
I judge a lot of submissions on NEOGEO, and I automatically 5/5 anything with Mario Sprites in it because I loved those old sprite animations so much!
Aww man, I remember always loved watching his sprite flashes when they first came out. It's actually what got me into watching sprite movies and such.
R.I.P. Randy. You're the main reason I started watching flash animations in the first place.
R.i.p randy. Thanks for your dedication to the ng community and memorable sprite animations.
As I read the posts, it seems like Randy brought a lot of us here.
Oh man, that's no age. rip Randy, best wishes out to his family. He did some good stuff here, if you didn't watch them first time round go look at Tom's links.
I can't believe how big his work was here. I remember sitting at a table with him at a wedding in our family and he was explaining to me what sprites were and to check out his videos. I remember his Super Mario Bros. ringtone on his phone. I swore he was a nerd trapped in an NFL linebacker's body lol. I'm definitely gonna miss him and having him photoshop all of my damn facebook pictures breaking my balls lol.

Yeah, that is a shame though, I actually remember watching all of those videos in the "early days" of Newgrounds.
It wasn't anything drug related. I just don't want to put specifics because of fucked up jokes I've already seen posted about him. The last thing I want for his mother to see is some hater making a joke animation or picture about his death. It wasn't anything suffering or drug related though, I can promise you guys that.
Oh my god, I'm in shock. I use to watch his flash movies all the time when I was younger.
R.I.P Randy Solem, you are in our hearts forever
I don't even know where to begin. I first found VGDC back in March of 2002. I would visit VGDC every single day to watch his flash movies and browse around the site. One day while on VGDC I saw the ad for newgrounds with Mario popping up. So I clicked it and found another website I would be addicted to for the next ten years.
Getting back to Randy, I saw Goof Troop Kombat and loved it. This movie is where I would eventually get my namesake before the lockdown happened. In 2003, I remember when VGDC was redesigned. I wasn't happy about it because of the loss of the navigation music. I eventually grew used to it and would wait for a new flash by Randy.
Fast forward to 2005. From the first day I found VideogameDC, I always wanted to make my own flash toons. I got a
copy of flash mx 2004 from my schools computer lab and starting making stuff. I always found it amusing that an artist who makes sprite movies inspired me but I haven't made one yet. Newgrounds has been a big part of my life and to hear about then death of my main inspiration is extremely saddening and just flat out shocking. I thank you Randy for the countless laughs I've had. Rest in peace.
Sonic Vs Mario (VGDC) was the very flash animation that got me into Newgrounds in the first place.
RIP Randy :C
Yeah, I don't speak much...
...I don't believe it... I just.. I just can't believe it. How could of he died at such a young age?
Randy Solem was always one of my favorite users and I always loved his sprite movies... It's one of the reasons why I started animating in flash.
Such a great loss....
I was going to post on the original thread but was sidetracked.
Here's my take.
Even though many of us don't know him personally, when we first came to NG, his flash are the reason why we kept on coming back.
He was one of the best VG sprite flash artists and he will be missed.
