Holy shit this hits close to home! Randy and I had a small rivalry back in 07, I made a pilot episode of a sprite series called 'Generic Sprite Movie', and randy was the evil boss (Or, I called him 'Randeous Solomon')

This is because he sent me a mail because I gave one of his movies a shit review and yapped at him for 'stealing sprites' (They're all stolen, I was being a retard)

Fuck! I'm never deleting that mail. Bloody hell. R.I.P Randy, you're most definitely WERE the pioneer of sprite movies and RotMK got me into Flash. Thank you so much, you were a huge inspiration to me, and sorry we had that disagreement.

R.I.P. Randy.

You were one of the reasons I kept coming back to Newgrounds in 2002 and then signed up in '03. I'll miss you.

The reason isn't important guys. The point of the matter is he is gone and rather than asking questions about his death why not ask a question as to where we can all go from here and how we could all move on? Maybe ask ourselves what can we learn from our experiences with Randy whether they be positive or negative. I just think when it comes to questions about someones death its really just the wrong thing to be thinking about.

I know you guys are really interested in lots of things about Randy and thats great. But you know to be honest if it was someone in your family what would you care more about, how someone in your family died or the fact that you'll never get to see that person ever again?

My grandfather died at 94 years old because the hospital screwed up on his heart surgery. Even at 94 he would never have died as fast as he did if it wasn't for the surgeons nicking an artery. I loved him a hell of a lot. He was my mentor. You know what though, I really don't care how he died. I miss him terribly, and if I could have just one more day with him that would matter a hell of a lot more to me than caring about the whys and hows of his death. This is not something anyone wants to think about or be pumped for information about.

I must say too that Mike has been really awesome when it comes to being patient and not getting pissed off about any of these things. Mostly, he's focused on honoring Randy and he's asking others to share memories of him rather than getting petty about things here and there. It shows loads of maturity on his part. So I say just share your sentiments and memories of Randy. Let the circumstances lie as they are and stop questioning why he died and start questioning where we can all go from here and what can be learned from Randy's life and experiences.

*sigh* Oh boy... here we go again...

If you want to move on since Randy died then make your move. No one's telling you which path to go because it's all up to you.

It's subjective.

I understand that you had a rivalry with Randy (or so I hear), but can't you just let people state their memories of what they enjoyed from him? If I was in your situation and knew he died, that rivalry would die out. It's just a way of respecting the dead (even though that never really happens on newgrounds, but that's beside the point)

The reason isn't important guys.

Well said.

But the reason IS important, at least to me that is.

For example my best friend who killed himself 2 months ago by throwing himself in front of a train and i still dont know why he did that, and that's been bugging me and everyone who knew the guy.

In other news, Edd Gould died of cancer in March 25th, 2012. Another well known artist dead...

As if this site was cursed, and then they say they "die in threes".

Well, I get their point pretty much:

1st: Randy Solem
Then: Luccas Bodde
Now: Edd Gould

And the weird part is, they all died very young. Why is that? I find that fascinating yet disturbing.

I was probably one of his least favorite people. Through the heated exchanges we had over the years, he's helped me learn that our positions, on whatever it was we had, were trivial and unimportant, and that fellow animators should support each other, because we each share a sacrafice when animating on our own. I've saved one of his many successes, which was his TV interview on AotS, someone has that on youtube.

Wishing his family the best.

Randy was one of the earliest flash animators I ever saw, and his ROTMK videos were one of the coolest things I watched as a teenager. He was the one reason I ever discovered newgrounds and got me interested in flash videos.
May he rest in peace, and my deepest condolences to his family...

My brief experience with Randy Solem summarized:

I saw his very first flash movie on the day it was submitted when I was a kid. I thought it was hilarious and I became a fan of his instantly. Something gave me the bright idea to make sprite flashes of my own. They sucked. A lot. Randy took the time to give me tips here and there to help with the flash and eventually a few of them passed judgement which you can see on my ClassicCoolboyman account. At the same time, I taught him a thing or two about ROM hacking, and Randy made his very own Super Mario Bros level a long ass time ago. I wish I still had that ROM, iirc the level was halfway decent.

Later on, we had a falling out. He made a flash movie that I didn't care for so I told him. He got extremely defensive and it also made his friend (I forget his name) hate me with a passion for whatever reason. Down the line, I got older, realized he wasn't some flash god. I grew to hate his flash movies and I look back to why I ever looked up to him in the first place.

But fuck that, that was years ago. Maybe he became a better person, maybe not. I haven't really kept up with him. But here's the bottom line:

Did I hold a negative opinion towards him up until this day? Yes
Do I hate his flash movies? Yes
Did he deserve to die? No

What really bothers me the most is now that his daughter no longer has a father. My condolences go out to all his friends and family. I just wish I checked up on him in the last few years, just to say hi or anything. Sure I dislike his flash movies, but you know what? It got people to animate. Like others have said, people started off with sprites to experiment because of him and moved onto more professional animation. Hell it got me to make more and more flash movies, which in turn may have had a turn in inspiring Strawberry Clock because of all the negative reviews I was getting on my flash that I found so hilarious. So overall, I'm glad he submitted everything that he did even if I don't like them anymore.

To each his own. You'll sure as hell be missed from me dude.

I gotta say Randy did something amazing and he got me involved with a lot of things, one of them; making flash movies, I joined his forums and visited regurarly. He was also half-norwegian which was cool because I'm a norwegian. He was one of those who inspired me and probably many others, he held the forums up but he wasnt on much, but we had already created a good community there. I hate that one of those who brought us all together in that forum now is gone. I will miss him, and the inspiration he gave... I am now watching the funeral of mario in one of his movies and reflecting on him

rest in peace randy
