Randy Solem - Rotmk, Videogamedc

Sorry guys, I'm not a member here, but I figured I'd just let everyone know. Randy Solem, my cousin and 'uncle', had passed away Friday night at 36 years young. He was the owner/creator of VideoGameDC and the Rise of the Mushroom Kingdom series. He always wanted to get back into the web/animation/game dev scene, but a lot of unexpected things had taken place in life for Randy. He leaves behind his girlfriend Danielle and their 18 month old daughter Rielle. If anybody is interested in any form of donations that go 100% to his daughter and daughter's mother, please inbox me. I know a lot of guys have had some harsh words for Randy because of his persona on his forum, but honestly it was all in good fun. I was there many of the times he'd break balls and act like a tough guy about posts, he was never serious. Randy was the biggest kid at heart and made everyone laugh everywhere. Everyone wanted him at their wedding or bachelor party.

Again, sorry for this being a first post, however he always used to brag about his newgrounds hosting and videos being played all the time on newgrounds and the community a few years ago. ROTMK and his fanbase meant everything to him, so I figured I'd just post this final update for Randy.

Yeah man he definitely was. He didn't judge anyone, never a dick to anybody. I mean like he was like 6'1 220 cut up, good lookin dude, but never acted like he was better than anybody. Would be friends with and have a good time with anybody- looks, color, social status, nothing mattered.

And yeah as far as the flash, to be honest he never was up on a high horse about it. He liked the attention from it on the net, but it really was all just about his love for the games he grew up with, not about being some top guy.

Shit. He was one of my first favorite Flash artists. I remember watchin' his stuff almost ten years ago. He plays a big part in why I started liking Flash movies.

It's always sad to see a member who committed time to putting out entertainment for others to enjoy. I haven't really seen much of his sprite work, but I definitely remember him from the NG Deathmatch flash.

Back in 2006, when I finally made this account, Randy Solem was one of the kings of sprite animations, well-established and very well-known. It's a shame that he could never return. He will be missed.

Yeah damn that sucks. I've never been a sprite animation type but he definately was a household name in the history of the portal.

I also found newgrounds through vgdc, though im not into watching sprite animations anymore, the ROTMK series was one of the first animations i saw and had actually got me interested in animating with flash.

Man, i remember watching Mario vs Sonic so many years ago....that was one of the first ever sprite animations i watched, i thought it was so awesome. and then later when i watched ROTMK, i just found it to be an absolute joy.

Heya, I think you would be pleased to hear that we've set up a VGDC memorial facebook page where many old vgdc board members have reunited, been talking, and skyping together again like the old days. We're thinking about making a memorial sprite flash collab in memory of Randy, and we've all been encouraged to start making sprite films again! =)
