4.07 / 5.00 13,902 ViewsI went shooting and I loved it. I want a gun of my own. Anybody have any advice for handgun purchasing/carrying? The laws are confusing for a guy on a student visa. Federal? Local? I'm in Oregon, if that helps. I'm thinking about a Colt 1911 chambered in 9mm, if possible. Anybody want to give me advice on guns, buying, laws, etc?
and no, I don't plan on killing anybody.

No, he's going to want something easy to reload, so that when a teacher/principle tries to approach him between reloads, it doesn't take him long before he's loaded and ready to shoot them.
Try an AK-47 OP.

Yeah but they don't hold a lot of rounds, and extended clips are illegal in a lot of states.
I'm not 100% on anything about owning guns, but I can tell you right now it's gonna be a bitch getting authorization to carry a gun, especially if you're not in any career line like law enforcement where it would at least make a little sense. Although if it means anything, I know a gun nut in North Carolina who's probably around 23 and has a concealed weapons license. He's not in any kind of military career that I know of, and carries a tiny revolver with him everywhere. I imagine weapon laws would regulate how large the gun and its bullets can be for you to legally carry one in public, but again, I can't say for sure.
You look nice today.

Cereal is pretty cool. If you're cool you'll add me on Steam. Also, Letterboxd.
Go to a gun store and talk with the people there. Usually, people working in a gun store know their stuff about guns and gun laws and all that. Colt 1911 is a great choice for a handgun, by the way.

yea in NC its really not that hard to carry a gun, and you dont need a permit to carry a gun....as long as you dont get searched, keept it in your glove box and lock your glove box when you get pulled over THEY CANT DO SHIT ABOUT IT

Now I have no idea how gun laws are in Oregon, but ideally, once you're 18, you should be able to get a gun from your local gun shop without much hassle.
Gun laws vary from state to state. Some you don't even need a license for concealed carry, while othersCoughcoughcomieforniacoughcoughare total dipshits and will barely allow you to own one let alone use it...
I AM THREAD KILLER!
Just buy what feels right and what you're comfortable with. Are you looking to have it on you at all times or is it a home defense weapon? Also factor in that some are easier to carry and conceal than others and may conflict with your final purchase.
I would probably check the state level laws in Oregon to see how long you have to wait, and/or if you need to jump through any legal hoops that they have, {and since Oregon is largely a liberal state last time I checked, gut feeling, you'll be waiting for a while.} before getting your hands on a gun.
Of course, you can skip a lot of the hassle by going to traveling gun shows and see if they have the gun you're looking for there, which most likely they'll have.
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

Is that legal though? I'm on a student visa so everything gets a little tricky.

Really ? I didn't know that, I still want the 32rnd mag for my Glock 18 when I get one

I'm fairly sure it is, considering most traveling gun shows I've been to, all you need is to be 18 and have some sort of ID with you. But I probably should've mentioned that you should talk to people in a gun store before you go to any gun show and do research beforehand on the requirements to enter.

You're a student on Visas OP?
You are not allowed to purchase firearms here in the US then.
Sorry bro.

Yes. They require a legal form of US identification proving US citizenship and residency.
OP has none of that.
I was wondering when someone would say, "He's not a citizen!"
Just think of your time on the shooting range as a first step to eventual ownership...
like kids in the 1980's thought of the arcade, in time you'll be able to bring one home (if you get citizenship here).
Now building Vault 101, reverse engineered from yesterdays technology.. or I could ignore it, and let you figure it out |:

aye I kno someone you can get some from...but I should keep that on the hush hush
step 1: get citizenship
step 2: get either a rifle and just pass your background check ( example make sure you don't fuck up and do any violent crimes/ felonies/ become insane type stuff) or look into handgun laws and see if you need a permit to own and to carry one like you do in new york state. get your permits, pass your background check and the shop and make sure you have all you need and get a handgun you like. check out what the store has.
also i like how the people calling magazines clips and shit who have never held/ seen a firearm are attempting to give him advice..... stick to dickbuns advice basically. also semi auto ak rifles are pretty nice... unless you get citizenship and live in a state that allows full auto tax stamps or w/e and have over $10,000 for 1 rifle then you aren't get any full autos any time soon like people seem to think you can just get. probably due to stupid news reports that cnn does showing bullshit propaganda....

Try an AK-47 OP.
Remember kids can't aim. Give him a M249 LAW to spray freely. It's 100 5.56 mm bullets per magazine.

not really all that funny actually..... T.T
also apparently people have never heard of having more than 1 magazine in this thread. if someone has ten rounds and has expended them all, they can reload in about 2seconds...... i live in a state where everything is heavily restricted compared to most and funny enough the crime rates didn't change when post-1994 "high cap" magazines were banned. guess the large city and drug problems are the cause of crime and not pistol grips on rifles and magazines over 10 rounds. ( if you posses a magazine holding 12 rounds in my state made after 1994 you would be a felon....)
NEW SUGGESTION!
you could probably get a pellet/ bb gun for now. it is better than nothing and there are some pretty good ones that aren't too expensive. i used to have a "chinese pellet rifle" when i was younger. it shot about 700fps and lasted me from age 7ish to around 13. they make pellet pistols too, even semi auto ones. i have one of those right now. they are c02 powered and cost very little to go shooting with. try one out op.
i have the pellet pistol pictured below. cost $50 a few years ago, and the pellets are like $4 for 300ish i think. c02 costs like $5 for 5 which will be good for about 1 and 1/2 containers of pellets. rifles are pump mostly and require no c02. some rifles are semi auto and c02 powered but they are over $100 each. pellet guns > bb guns btw. people hunt squirrels and rabbits with some air rifles in the .177 or .22 cal. the pistol is .177 and my rifle was too.
When I bought my K98, it had to sit in a gun store for a 14 day period before I could pic it up. Of course my gun is a rifle and pistols are classified as concealed weapons which I'm pretty sure you might need a permit for. If you don't it's actually better to leave it exposed then to hide it in case your being searched.
As for a Colt 1911, it's a brand that may be hard to come by or might be very expensive. You're better off looking for a 45 that looks and feels like a colt but made by someone else or any 45. Of course, you might also want to look at ammo prices. Perhaps your best bet is to go with a Beretta 9mm, it's a reliable gun used by our modern military and something I have a lot of ammo for...
Once upon a time...
