It looks like a slightly altered copy of the throwing ball they used in the original "Phantasm" movies (older 70-80s movies). THey would throw this normal looking metal ball at someone, and two spears would appear in the side of it and kill the person the ball hit (they usually aimed for the head or heart; can't even remember what the movie was about now, but I just remember wanting to own one of those).
