Do you think, as of 2012, people automatically prefer "brooding heroes" as opposed to colorful, exotic heroes?

Not a term. I mean heroes like the Punisher, or the new Batman, or Spawn. Heroes that aren't exactly the kind you want to get an autograph from, the ones that brood a lot, have reasons to brood; dark, depressing heroes.

black heroes

...actually, I was referring to gray heroes.

Well, it sells better. 'Broody' heroes automatically have dark pasts, usually involving multiple dead relatives or lovers or children and people just like reading that I guess.

Brooding heroes are three-dimensional and easier to relate to.

I've always preferred them. They've usually got a more interesting backstory, and they're usually cooler than your average hero too.

Spawn always gave me a mental hard on, the whole " woe is me" characters are kinda hot.

I for one, enjoy it when the dark, brooding, depressed type become an hero.
