Not a term. I mean heroes like the Punisher, or the new Batman, or Spawn. Heroes that aren't exactly the kind you want to get an autograph from, the ones that brood a lot, have reasons to brood; dark, depressing heroes.

batman and the punisher are white not dark

Well, it sells better. 'Broody' heroes automatically have dark pasts, usually involving multiple dead relatives or lovers or children and people just like reading that I guess.
Brooding heroes are three-dimensional and easier to relate to.

I've always preferred them. They've usually got a more interesting backstory, and they're usually cooler than your average hero too.

Spawn always gave me a mental hard on, the whole " woe is me" characters are kinda hot.
