After, oh, about 10 years of being online and reading "That's gay, that's queer, you are a gay queer homosexual faggot who likes dick", I have to say something. I love Newgrounds, first of all. I would like to know why rascist material isn't allowed, but homophobic material is? Do a search...

Faggot - 15 found (the word is allowed), all offensive
Gay - 80,000 searches, but no listing allowed
Homosexual - 20 found, 19 of which were offensive

and just to be fair...

Nigg*r - 2 found, both with a low number of votes, so it probably wasn't flagged yet.

So, hate seems to be a no-no on Newgrounds, unless you're queer, I concluded, before emailing Tom about it. He requested that I write up a piece for NG Mag about homophobia in reviews, flash, and the BBS, which I'm working on currently.

In the meantime, I'd like to get some people together to warm up their whistles and help me in the fight to mark certain reviews abusive for hateful comments, and to alert Tom and Wade about homophobic flash animations.

I was going to post this in the Clubs forum, but thought the Politics forum would be more appropriate. So, this is the beginning of the Gay and Lesbian Anti-Defamation Blam Club.

P.S. When I tried to submit this, I used a word that wasn't allowed. I went back and edited. The word "nigg*r" was flagged, but I could say "faggot" all I wanted? HYPOCRITES!!!

It's unfortunate, but the words Gay and Queer have become common in today's modern vocabulary. Words like bizarre, strange and abnormal don't seem to carry any impact. I'd say that about 75% of people who actually use anti-homosexual slang aren't even homophobes. I work with teens and pre-teens on a daily basis, I speak from personal experience. Hate for and fear of homosexuality is on a constant drop thanks to awareness, and increased acceptance.

I agree wholeheartedly that homophobia is on the downslope. I can understand that calling something "gay" and "queer" means strange or sucky. My problem is that when someone calls another gay or fag or gets sexually graphic from there when it's obviously meant to be an insult. I'm pissed that reviews for some animations from a year ago call someone a fag, but it never got flagged until I came along. I know that there are other gay/ lesbian/bisexual users here, and straight people who are sympathetic to the cause, so I'm merely asking that, at the least, flag what's abusive. What I'd like is to have a watchdog group. I've been on the look out for 2 months now, and I'm sure there are other people who feel the same way.

I hope as though I didn't seem to be downplaying the gravity of homophobic slang. It's definitely wrong and I'm very surprised to hear that its actually tolerated. Not everyone follows the same codes of conduct, so I suppose there is a need for some form of control.

From the BBS Rules:

No hateful or racist remarks. You may have noticed that the "n-word" is not allowed on the BBS. There is a reason for this. Using trickery or any other shenanigans to get around this is bannable. Over-use of the word gay or any other homosexual put down is also prohibited.
