I'm finally upgrading to a smartphone, but I have no idea which one to get. I have Verizon, and a lot of my friends have been telling me to go with an iPhone, but lots of others have been saying good things about Droids. Anyone care to provide some consumer insight on their phones and why you would or wouldn't recommend them?

Personally, I love the iPhone. But I might be an unreliable source as I have never used a Droid. The iPhone has never failed me, and nothing about it disappoints me (even without jailbreaking). It is all opinionated though, like most things.
If both devices seem to be equally beneficial, I would go with the cheapest.

I personally like Droids much more than the iPhone, but if I had to recommend just one phone it would be the new CInco-Fone. There's a commercial for it somewhere that has Ed Begley, Jr. in it.

Do what you want mang.
Go to a phone shop that lets you play around with them, and make up your own mind on what you like best.

If you are a geek -> Android
If you are stupid -> iPhone
If you are desperate to be original -> Windows Phone 7
If you are retarded technofunctionally -> Non-smartphone
I'm both stupid and a geek. Clever but ignorant. Witty but slow.
Well, honestly, if you just want a simple smartphone, get an iPhone.

Oh and I am all anti-Apple and everything but the iPhone is just superior when looking in the area of ease-of-use.
It's more expensive though, tough choice.

The iPhone seems like a good choice. Money isn't an issue for me, but I don't like all the comments I've been getting on bad battery life. I need my phone to last at least an entire day with moderate use.

I reckon that shouldn't present much of an issue - I think iPhone generally have pretty decent battery times. Oh and, if you like me is obsessed with things like smooth menus iPhone is also the obvious choice. Look at me, I sound so pro-Apple. I prefer PC though so don't be scared! x-)

I just got an iPhone from Sprint over Samsung, HTC, and Motorolla droid phones and I can honestly say it was a good choice. I got applecare with it since my blackberry had dogshit for insurance on it where applecare is pay 50$ and get a brand new phone if they can't help you. I don't like apple products... blah blah third party apps.... but honestly a phone and a computer serve different purposes so I think in this case the actual advantages of apple outweigh the downsides.

Yeah, right now I have an Octane. There are so many things I love about it, like the keyboard, amazing battery life, durability, simplicity, size, etc. It will be sad to move on, but right now I really need an internet ready phone that I can go online with and check e-mails and all that other fancy stuff... I honestly think that you would find the option I have layed forth to be the smartest one.
Yeah I'd also recommend this. My brother does the same thing and he's perfectly fine with it. It's something I'd like to try out eventually.

Your friends are stupid, get new friends.
I would recommend a Samsung Galaxy Nexus or S2.

Yeah right now I have an iPod touch and my little flip phone. But I need a phone that will let me access the internet when WiFi isn't available.

I would have to say Android. Any new or recent Android/HTC phone should do the trick for you. If you're into maxing your phones performance out much the same like you would on a computer, then they're pretty much perfect for that. If you just want a simple, user friendly (when it wants to be) phone, then stick with the iPhone. That being said, Android phones are just as user friendly, and they have the benefit of being able to replace the batteries with ease, as well as (with most of them anyway) expandable memory (whatever Micro SD cards go up to these days).
Read a few reviews, go to a phone shop and play around with them and see what you like.

After a couple days of going into multiple phone places, including the local verizon store, they've still got me split between the iphone 4s, razr maxx, and the rezound. i like the rezound because it's got 4g like the razr maxx and a better HD screen etc, but the battery life on the razr maxx is still really appealing to me. the iphone looks like it's just got reliability going for it, but i also like the idea of being able to jailbreak it.
Any more comments to through out there regarding overlooked pros and cons for one of these 3 phones?
