How did you choose what you believe, and were you brought up to believe it?

I tried getting the answers from some Mormons on Mormon chat, but they just said they got a message from god, so I thought I'd ask you guys. Also, atheists and agnostics answer too.

As for me, my mum said she was Christian but I never saw her pray or do anything remotely religious, and my dad and me didn't believe in anything.

And I know it's a lot to ask for, especially on Newgrounds, but please don't turn this into a debate. I just want to know how people have made their choices.

Religious thread cleverly disguised by title.

I grew up in the south in a private school, didn't know the least bit about religion until I did my own research at nine or ten. Luckily I wasn't raised in church like some of my cousins, sure it's a great community and all, but it would've taken from my traditionally lazy Sundays spent with best redneck friends (also surprisingly non religious).

In terms of religion?

I was brought up Protestant, but in no way does that mean I believe in Protestantism. Since high-school I have been refining my own, personal beliefs into what makes the most logical sense. Opening your eyes (especially when dealing with religion) can be very rewarding, and you may even learn something that you didn't even realize was there. I can't say I call myself any religion. I am not atheist at all. But, I am also not what you would think of as "Christian/Protestant". And, I am not agnostic. Personally, I believe we each have our own "religion" and should not impose unclear beliefs on others.

Education is what gave me my beliefs. My faith can be generally described by a type of Occam's Razor. And, I consider it extremely arrogant to proclaim something as truth when you, yourself, have little to no experience on the subject. Since none of us living have died, I will probably not trust your opinion on what happens after death.

My parents brought my up with Christianity. I believed it and prayed every day until I realized My prayers didn't work. Later I realized that parents don't know everything. So I took an unbiased step back to look over the whole thing and became an atheist. I can't believe so many people get brainwashed into this shit.

I didn't choose what to believe. I was told information which later became true. So I had to dispose myself to the fact that destiny is one helluva strong force only a very few can change.
Prophecy kinda sullies religion in that way, I think.

Cant say that I ever really decided on what I choose to believe. Its just what I always felt was right. I was brought up Christian but I only took what I wanted from it because generally Christianity does not fit me well.

I was brought up to believe in God and be Catholic, but then I went on the internet a lot and that influenced me to be an atheist.

As for what my belief is now though I'm pretty much irreligious/agnostic.

I'm still very 'spiritual' and interested into religion though. Buddhism fascinates me.

But besides that I don't care much for religion and don't really have a belief or disbelief in God.

Oh yeah and I guess you could say I'm a 'secular humanist' though I haven't looked that up myself, but from what I've heard it fits me well. I don't like the idea of religious dogma dictating the laws and the way we behave and etc.

I just always found it hard, even as a kid, to believe that there was someone or something out there who created the world. I always envisioned some guy just sitting up in the clouds looking down on the world and I always thought that sounded silly. I guess the opinion stuck with me because even now I don't follow any religion or have any desire to start.

Primary school didn't really help things much either. Every Friday morning we had to sing hymns and take part in a prayer. I hated every minute of it and it probably played some role in my dislike for religion.

I was raised as a Catholic and sent to a Catholic school. Probably halfway through high-school I started to question what they were teaching me with regards to religion, and then I formed my own opinions about it all.

I observed the actual evidence of any supernatural entities, and formed my own ideas based around them, instead of believing what I was just told like a dunderfuck.

Well ok here are my religious beliefs. I believe that there is no higher power and if there is then he/she/it wouldn't want us as it's creations to wander around the earth looking sorry for our selves and siting in the coldest building imaginable just to praise him/her/it. My belief is that life is less important then most people think and that the only real good thing to do is to make life as happy for yourself and the people around you. Do not believe this just because I said it! I would hate to change somebody.

I tried getting the answers from some Mormons on Mormon chat, but they just said they got a message from god, so I thought I'd ask you guys. Also, atheists and agnostics answer too.

I never believe somebody who has claimed to talk to a higher power. I have nothing against any belief system and I respect that people can think whatever they wish but if you claim that you simply lose me.

And I know it's a lot to ask for, especially on Newgrounds, but please don't turn this into a debate. I just want to know how people have made their choices.

Well I never really had a religion, I guess I defined my beliefs when I started watching Bill Hicks and his It's Just a Ride speech. I also read some of the Hunter S. Thompson books.

I said no to drugs but they just wouldn't listen.

I was raised Catholic, but in recent years I've been having doubts here and there.

So currently, I guess you could identify me as "Agnostic/Catholic" but I try not to focus on the label aspect of it.

I was brought up that vague CofE non-church-going-except-Christmas religion most other Brits are.
One day I actually questioned my beliefs and realised I didn't believe in God and decided I was an atheist, now I would call myself an apatheist.

All the questions apply to anyone or anything, as long as they/it can answer.

Me too. I just wish more people would look at what they do and think about what they do for their religion, and whether it helps them or not. I wouldn't even care if they went to another religion, as long as they actually took the time to decide whether they believe they were right or not.

My family are Catholics, ive yet to tell them I'm agnostic because as with most religions there's an element of discontent with those that have a different belief system them you.

Wars over religion have been going for centuries if you just leave people be and just let them practice their beliefs then the world wouldn't be so messed up
