I didn't know who Paul McCartney was but the name sounded familar. I first heard of him in high school because one of my old ass teachers played and talked about the Beatles half way through art class every- damn-day.

You mean bands that ended before some of these people in question were even alive?
I wouldn't expect kiddies these days to know of Chuck Barry, hell, I wouldn't expect a few of those upset about people not knowing McCartney to know of him, outside of maybe making the connection that "Oh yeah, he was a musician or something"
But of course, being a historical figure makes you forgetful right? I am sure nobody knows who Alexander The Great, Cleopatra, Henry Ford, FDR or other people who changed history in their respective fields because that's pretty forgetful.
Are you actually implying what the Beatles did was on par with those other people? Besides, all of these people are covered in history class. To be honest, we wouldn't know who Cleopatra was if it wasn't for history class. The only Egyptians off the top of my head are Ramses, Tut, and Cleo right now.
This argument is stupid... People know who McCartney is because he changed musical history. People grow up learning history. If you don't know who McCartney is, and you aren't playing along with the joke, then you really need to start paying more attention.
Yes, they learn history. Not musical history. Quite frankly, not everyone gives a single fuck about musics past. Do you know who Ferdinand Morton is? Bill Hayley? People need to stop bitching because the younger generations don't know about the big names of their hay day. The same things applied when we were young, it's just the nostalgia whoring was nowhere near the levels it is today thanks to the interwebz.

"Who is Paul McCartney?" doesn't even deserve to be a plausible question.

People know who fucking Beethoven is, his musics a lot older than Paul McCartney's. And honestly, 99% of people DO know who he is, it's just a small percentage of people who don't. Most ghetto ass pop obsessed plebeians who can't even form a proper sentence still know who Paul McCartney is. He's legendary.
Beethovens compositions can be played on a piano
a man who plays a piano is called a pianist
pianist sounds like penis
maybe they are just not exposed to paul mccartney music
or they will just Google it
