So a democrat representative wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.
Just how stupid is this guy. For one it is completely unnecessary and second we don't own the gulf, so I don't think it is even legal for us to do so. Either way it is a stupid idea.

We can call it whatever we want to. That doesn't mean the proposal is any less stupid.

Wow. See this is where we get detached so much by our own culture that we forget how much of it was made by Spain, Spain was the one who called the continents the America's in the first place, chances are Holland's ancestors weren't the people who named them.
However I'd like to see more reasoning behind this bill, so far no reason has been stated so you can only assume it's because he's an arrogant Nationalist.

It's stuff like this that makes me think our government's priorities are way out of whack. Hell California has legislation telling you you can't dig into a beach more than 18 inches while they should be focusing on how to prevent the damn state from becoming a ghost town. I'm sure every state has some frivolous legislation on the table.

Naw. Its just the politics that are out of order.

FYI, this is a county ordinance, having nothing to do with the California State Legislature.

Joke or not, I have to ask...
If we don't own the Gulf because it is not in our name, does that mean Mexico owns the Gulf of Mexico?

Why? I can understand that the so-called Americans inhabit the Americas, so the name what be suitable. But is such a change necessary?

By convention, territorial waters only go out 12 miles from the shore of a country. The Gulf of Mexico is just a geographic name, it doesn't correlate to an owner. Nobody really owns the gulf since no nation is willing spend time and resources to conquer and control the open sea (theoretically they could though, even if it breaks UN rules).

I read this yesterday. The Democrat was definitely parodying right wing efforts to denigrate Mexico.

Interestingly, in many places "America" refers collectively to all of North and South America. "Gulf of America" or "North American Gulf" would both, in some ways, be more appropriate names than "Gulf of Mexico"

I don't really think it matters at all what they call a part of the ocean, so this is really nothing more than cheap nationalism on the part of this guy. I would think that most people within the Gulf region don't really care about the name of said gulf to begin with, considering that they have the jurisdiction for 12 miles of the water within their borders, and they have been taught since preschool that it's called the Gulf of Mexico without much push back.
It's no different than say, South Korea deciding to re-name the Sea of Japan the East Sea because of there long standing beef with Japan. But to each his own, I guess.
Just stop worrying, and love the bomb.

Thought it sounded too rabidly nationalistic for the moderate party.

Considering that America is the only nation touching the gulf that has balls to do anything about it... we can call it whatever we want.
